Hi,

I just came to know about a site which is offering link exchanges. You can check the site below:

Link Market - Free Link Exchange, Link Building and Link Trade Directory.

I have a new site. I need to build links. The site seems to be tempting. But not sure, if exchanging links through will do good or bad for my site.

Need your suggestions. Please share your knowledge and experience regarding this.

Link exchange is still worth something, especially if you can exchange links with quality websites in your niche and if you can do 3-way rather than reciprocal link exchanges. However, I used Link Market a few years ago and wasn't impressed with the quality of the websites there. Things might have changed since then but I'm not eager to pop in there again.

      Hi benz,

What is the 3-way exchange? Can you please spare some time and explain a little bit more about it?

        The concept goes like this:

Google frowns on reciprocal links. While a handful of them is okay, any more than that can bring repercussions for your rankings. At their best, they provide no link juice at all to websites that use them since Google automatically discounts them (the only value is when the links are used the way they should be used -- to refer people to another site which has material they may find useful which isn't on your site).

In order to get around Google's restrictions, some people started to do three way exchanges. The idea is that if I own two websites, I'll make a deal with you where I put a link to your website on site A. You then put a link to site B on your site. This way, it appears to Google as if it's a one way link, which does give link juice.

The problem with this approach is that Google considers it to be black hat SEO. While it's not illegal, if Google catches you doing it, they can punish your site by moving it way down in the rankings or they may even de-index you completely (i.e. you simply won't appear in the rankings at all).

Considering that it's primarily amateurs and spam artists that engage in this kind of activity, it's generally considered a waste of time and isn't done by any professional SEO experts.

          Hi erichammer,

Thanks a lot. I have got a good idea about 3-way exchange.

After reading your posts it seems to me that it's not a good idea to risk a site whose primary traffic source is intended to be search traffic in future.

I have one question in this regard. If this kind of link exchanging is not liked by Google, then how a site like this is having PR5 status? (The site i mentioned in this thread have PR value of 5 )

I don't know all the details of how Google works. They keep that a closely guarded secret . However, I would suggest that the reason is probably because they themselves don't engage in such activities. They just offer a place for others to do it. Like I said, in moderation, it's not a problem so it's theoretically not a violation Google's rules. The fact that it's usually abused heavily is beside the point...

Google specifically frowns on link exchanges. While you can do a handful of them with sites that are relevant to your particular niche, you should NOT join a link exchange thinking it's a great idea. 99.9% of sites on link exchanges are either run by amateurs who don't know how or why SEO works and what Google's rules actually or they are run by spammers who are doing whatever they can to get their worthless message out to people.

While I may be new to certain aspects of IM, this is something I am very familiar with -- link exchanges are only good for a HANDFUL of sites. Use them sparingly and ideally, wrap content around them (i.e. write a blog post about how you found this great site that you think your users would find useful). Putting a link exchange on a page labeled links is a perfect way to get Google to ignore your links at best and de-index you at worst.

    Eric

P.S. Three way exchanges are also banned by Google and when they catch such arrangements, they have been known to de-index sites using them.

I think that link exchanges can help in the short-term to increase your PR, but if the site that you are exchanging links with gets blacklisted by Google, then it will negatively affect your page rank.

You definitely do not want the majority of your links to be reciprocal links, "G" will credit them but not as heavily as one-way inpointing backlinks. But I do accept QUALITY linking exchange partners, linking from a quality site, especially from the same niche is good stuff. But focus on attaining one-way links of quality, it portrays to "G" that your site is popular and appreciated and not just bargaining with others for swapped links.
