.xml in footer question

I have a client who had next to no text on his homepage, which obviously wasn't helping his on page seo. I wrote up some text, and internal/external link structure, and asked him to put it in the bottom of the page. He replies:

My web developer wants to give me space in the footer of the webpage for your text/links as an uploaded .xml file that I can change anytime by replacing the xml. My concern is the xml will be read by spiders and organic search as an image, and not text - but I really don't know for sure. If you go into any product page on providencecable.com on the lower left margin you will see "Headlines" - This is an .xml file I can change anytime.

So will this happen? Will an .xml file loaded into the footer be read as an image?

    Hi rafterman,

I think you may be confused about exactly what is happening with your XML file. It appears that it is being used simply as a file to store data. The server-side scripting is reading that file and rendering the content stored in that files as HTML content which can be viewed as text by both visitors and search engines alike.
