Syndicated Content for Real Estate Site

I'm wondering about using syndicated content (snippets, not full articles, I assume) for a real estate site. The site additionally has original content that is SEO optimized, but we're looking for ways to "beef things up" that isn't going to damage the site's rankings. Is autoblogging mixed with original articles a bad idea? Because of competition, I'm having a heck of a time getting the site even in the top 100. I've optimized everywhere I can, and this week, we're going to start slamming social networking. I've been trying to do some good backlinking, but it's hard considering the field. Maybe not. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.
