War on profile links?

Hey guys, for the last 8 months of been number one for my keyword. With a combination of article links, book marks, blog posts and profile links I got it to number one with around 7k back links according to yahoo explorer.
About two weeks ago I suddenly dropped to position 2, so i fired a few profile runs at it and few days later i'm back to one. Since I had been number one I did my best to just short a 2-5 profile links at it every day to maintain.
About 2 days after get back to spot 1 the site suddenly disapears for my main keyword. All other keywords on the site are still active so the website is still in the index.
Since then my website is bobbing up and down between the last spot on the first page and top of the 2nd. At the moment every time i through profile links at one of my pages it seems to push it down the rankings.
I know there has been some recent changes to google. I'm just not sure how to go about getting my sites ranked again now. Has anyone else had any of these problems? the anoying thing is my site has all these links and Pr of 3 and there are sites above me on the first page with no PR and about 7 backlinks... So I must be getting punished for something.
