Linking Question...

Should we place link or keyword within the first paragraph of our blog, or is this considered bad practice?

And also, if i have a post on my blog with multiple keywords that I am targeting, what is a good amount of times i should link out on my keyword?

What's considered too many times, or not enough times, or does it make a difference?

And is it good practice to use a variation of our main keyword?

In many thanks,
Tom

  • Hey Tom,

I have practiced the SEO effect on all of your above points previously and here is what I have found:

    1. Yes, the higher up the link, the better juice it will give to the target URL. However, the actual blog post you are linking from can be slightly effected in the SERPs for too many obvious in-your-face links early in the post.

I find that putting the link just above the fold give the best results.

    2. No more than twice per post to the same URL. It gets a little spammy after than and search rankings with suffer.

    3. Definitely use a variation of your keyword as often as possible to keep the backlinks looking natural, this will give best results over time and anchor your rankings down stronger for most Google updates.

I usually go for 70%-80% exact keyword anchor-text and 20%-30% variation of the keyword.

    Cheers,
    Dave

    • Thanks for that valuable info! When you say above the fold.... Do you mean halfway down the page -or- do you mean right above where you start scrolling?

    • Really! No more than twice per post to the same URL. I have it set up with a link cloaking plugin for my site....

...So if I decide to link out more than twice to the same URL --- do you mean the same root URL --> like http://mydomainname.com --- or will it help me disguise that to make a unique sub-folder name as php redirects for each link on my page if I decide to link more than twice... For Example ===>

      http://mydomainname.com/firstlink ---- http://mydomainname.com/secondlink ---- http://mydomainname.com/thirdlink --- etc...

      In Many Thanks,
      Tom

      (oops forgot the quote)
    • Nice this is a really useful tip, thanks mate
  • Most people will say to get your main kw within the first two sentences of your article. If you want to link out, go for it. I personally wouldn't link out more than one time with each keyword if you are set on linking out for each targeted kw.

You don't want your publication to look spammy by keyword stuffing or linking out using the same kw phrase over and over. Make it read as natural as you can.

You do want to use related keyword phrases as well in your article. Hope this helps.
