Google Farmer Out There To Kill Ya

Thousands of posts on the G Farmer by now. Yet to find someone happy with it. Here is a blog post at Elance that caught my fancy.

Some assumptions she makes-

  1. Google wants quality, original, and unique content.
  2. Ads to content ratio matter.
  3. Age of domain has nothing to do if your content is duplicate thousands times over.
Now, I have huge issues with 'original' content debate. On the G Farmer user forum i noticed hundreds of guys with content written by them being punished. Why? Because some nasty scrapers copied their stuff and now Farmer finds that same content on thousands of site. Big G treats all the same.

This sounds like doom for a lot of affiliates relying on cheap content being wired to hundreds of article sites and web 2.0. Again, whats the guarantee that original/unique content will do you any good? its only good as long as G sees one copy of it out there.

Opinions please, guys!

I don't buy it. If Google were to treat all content the same, and disregard when it was first published or indexed, it would be way too easy to bring down any major player in the online marketplace.

It would become a strategy in which you get to the top by tearing the competition down, and it would create tons more duplicate content in the process - which is exactly what Google doesn't want.

It is impossible to condense the Google algorithm to a point where we're able to say that Google values all content equally. Most of us can't even comprehend how advanced their algorithm is, so the moment we start to make sweeping generalizations like that is the moment my BS detector goes off.

I'm fine with it. It had no effect on my rankings at all.

      This.

The only affect it's had on me is an improvement.

I'm actually looking forward to the next one.

Yeah, have to say that it was all a bit of a storm in a teacup for me too - had several pages (and EZA articles) actually go up in rankings - go figure

I am involved in a few niches and the only one that I have had a problem with scrapers was IM.... go figure that one too!

If people would focus on the quality of their content as much as they do the money it will make them, I doubt that Google would need an update to its algorithm as has recently been done. And I might be wrong here, but the only people I've seen complaining are the ones who depended upon the "cheap" articles and spun content. Take it as a lesson learned, I say, and put some effort into producing some real quality material (or at least paying for it).

I hope thats the case. Or some other way of crediting the original content owner.

Maybe Google does not care who wrote the content as long the searcher gets the best result. They are not too interested in the welfare of website owners, all they care about is themselves and the users of their website.

Not true in my case. I am looking at a SERP result right now where someone copied an article straight off of my blog last august and stupid Google gave them full credit for it AFTER they indexed it on my site first...the stupid fools...and it still sits there in the number one spot outranking me.

Oh, and yes, this is after the "wonderful" farmer update.

        This is what i mean!

BUT...in your case content is not the ONLY criteria that might be responsible for that other site outranking you. So saying that the copied content outranked the original one is a loose statement!

Yeah, Farmer hasn't bothered me much if at all. I did lose a few of my web 2.0s (hubpages and the like) but other sites are ranking much better in place of those. And i'll take that any day!

The update actually brought some of my older sites back to life again. All in all, the update was a positive one for my business.

Me too. I had a few older sites that were barely making $10 a month that I was almost going to get rid of that suddenly started making dollars each day. It's been a great change for sure.

  • For me it has resulted in increased earnings. Getting a lot of the Made For Adsense junk content farms out of the way has resulted in increased traffic.

Google Farmer is a good thing. People who are using schemes and poor quality content are being weeded out. How is that not good for people who are creating useful relevant content?
