On-site SEO question

I'm on the verge of re-designing my site completely and i have some on-site seo questions i'll like to ask before i begin.

1) Does the number of keyword on a page determine the one's search engine rank. For instance i have major keywords like web hosting, web design, seo, domain registration all on the home page. Now i think this may be the reason why i don't rank well for my two preferable keywords "web hosting, Web design". Will i have a better rank if i use just these two keywords on my homepage then have those other keywords in another page.

2) I read somewhere about how linking different pages can have either a positive or negative effect on SEO. This is what i want to do:

I want to make links linking to pages such as contact us, privacy, terms of service(TOS) and other web pages that i don't want search engines to index to be nofollow so that the link juice will not be wasted. I want the link juice to be concentrated on important pages. Does this make any sense.

  • 1. It is best to pick 2 or 3 keywords and optimize for those. I have heard that if you try to optimize for more than 3 or so, then Google can get confused and not really know exactly what your site is about.

    2. I don't think that will hurt, but I am not entirely sure. Many website do this, so I assume it will not hurt.

  • You might want too look a little deeper into some other keywords.

    Some of those get lots of searches but the competition is very difficult to get past.

    Use Google AdWords to help you find longer keywords (long tail) that have a lot of searches but less competition.

    • My website is not global. It's a Nigerian web hosting and design service provider so the competition is not too much. I'm currently placed on the 3rd page of gooogle for web hosting which has 9900 monthly searches.
  • PS, there are probably better ways to get traffic that counting on high rankings.

    Be active in forums and other online communities. Get some customers, use special offers to get them to write reviews about your hosting.

    I definitely recommend linking your relevant pages together. Use always the main keyword of each post that you are targeting and link it to a relevant page.

    Yap, you should use LSI keywords. Using LSI keywords normal if you write natural content and don´t focus on keyword stuffing.
