Hi would you go on keyword that has more than 40,000 global but less than 1000 local...

I wouldn't. I once started a site that had about the same figures. I think it was 44000 global and 800 local. I ranked #1 in the US in about 2 weeks and since then I have seen a handful of traffic. If a site has that much global search it means the keyword is popular outside of the US so theres probably plenty of competition in other countries. Another example my site I talked about, the main keyword was searched mostly in England, my site is #1 in the US and #80 in England and I can't budge it. Its just not worth the effort. Exact local search is the only number worth anything. Im not sure why this isn't stressed more often.

Do those 40,000 people have credit cards out and ready to spend in the niche?

If the answer is yes than why not go for it?!

dp40oz made the mistake of picking a keyword like yours with 40,000 global searches and 1000 local... and only marketing to the 1000 local people.

Use the Google Insight tool to see what location the largest % of people are searching for that term and so SEO for their geographic location and not the US. You might just find it actually easier to rank in those locations than in the US too!

I didnt make the mistake of only marketing to the 1000 local. I attempted to rank in the country where the keyword was popular and like I said, if the keyword is that popular the competition is likely very stiff, which it was.

I don't think telling him to go after a keyword with most likely extremely tough competition due to the search volume and trying to rank it another country is very smart. He'll have to basically get all of his backlinks from webpages from that specific country which is much harder then finding backlinks in the US. For example my keyword which was UK based would need me to get an incredible amount of backlinks from .uk sites. Now if you're in for this long and difficult process, then yes I agree go for it, but from what I sensed from the OPs question he isn't looking to do this. If you're gonna settle in for the work and go after 40000 search keywords may as well do it in the US.

Surely this doesn't need any discussion - it's just a case of common sense?

If the other 39,000 are people from low economy countries then they're not going to be able to afford your $37 eBook or whatever it is your selling.

    • In my opinion it all depends on whether or not the keyword is a 'buying keyword' or not.
If 1 out of every 20 people are going to buy what you are selling because they are looking for it, then 1,000 visitors each month will add up to a nice chunk of change.
A lot of folks say 'dont go for less than 1,000' (including me sometimes ), but it actually all depends on the sales funnel that that traffic is coming from to your site.

Best place to start is to register a domain with the extention of the location you want to target in the search engines. For example if your targeting UK results get a .co.uk domain and not a .com... Targeting canada get a .ca and not a .com also can help to have the actual location in the domain name after your keyword example: www. madeupdomaincanada.ca (I would stick with exact match domain first though)

I would register the domain with an address in the location of where you wish to rank and also have that same address featured someplace on the page you are trying to rank for that location. Google sees domain "who is" information even if it is hidden. It is not a heavy ranking factor but will help none the less.

Next is find a host that hosts your site on servers located in the location you wish to rank in. Google tracks your hosts IP and it does make a difference in the location of where your sites rank.

As for backlinks I would not worry too much if the page is located in the country your are trying to rank for. First build your domain and page trust rank with high PR quality backlinks anyplace you can find them no matter what topic the page is on...

Do not rotate anchor text at first what so ever and only use your main keyword phrase in the links. Keep in mind if your countries primary language is not English you are better off using their primary language as they are more likely to search in their native tongue.

If the site is new and the term is competitive, expect a first page ranking within 12 months with hard work. Not willing to put in that amount time, then SEO is not a marketing model for you and try location targeting using PPC.
