Finding Seasonal Items

I am considering experimenting with some seasonal Amazon sites that would be focused on making most of their earnings during certain seasons and less the rest of the year And I am curious for those of you that have experience with this sort of thing... how do you go about choosing the products?
I understand the basic idea of choosing products with good ratings on Amazon that also get decent search volume. And I also understand that certain products are going to get better search volume during certain times of year.
But the keyword tool shows search volume for the last month only. Going to Google Trends for each potential product doesn't seem like the best option but I can't think of a better one off hand. Also, what about new products that don't have any info yet to look at trends? Is it more just based on looking at similar products and hoping? Or do you stick with tried and true products?
