Duplicate content question

I have a sales page that ranks well in Google. Someone copy/pasted the content and posted it on a 'pirating request' forum.

Now the page is duplicate content. Does this affect my SEO ranking?

Let's turn the question around. What happens if I take the pages above me in search results and duplicate the content on various other websites?

Just curious.

  • It's not duplicate content. It's now syndicated content. Big difference.

    • What's the difference?

I also get a backlink from the 'syndicated' content.
  • Duplicate content is the same content found multiple times on the same website. Syndicated content is the same content found on multiple websites.

    • This issue again - Duplicate Content!

I completely disagree. Duplicate content is more or less identical content found on the same or on different websites. Syndicated content is one way by which duplicate content can arise.

The confusion arises because not all duplicate content is penalized by Google. Duplicate content on different sites is not penalized by Google unless in certain specified circumstances. On the other hand, most duplicate content on the same site is penalized by Google but here again there are some exceptions specified where it is not penalized.

Note that "duplicate" is an english word and in the dictionary and has only one meaning which is more or less "mirror". It is not the coinnage of Google and so whenever there is more or less a "mirror" of another content, it is a "duplicate" of that content.

  • You are the original content. So I'm sure Google will favor you in terms of ranking on that page.

    • Ahhh.. the old duplicate content question again.. Okay, do this..

      1. Search for the following phrase on Google.. "Ireland tried to draw a line under its financial crisis on Thursday"

      2. Now look at how many different web pages are indexed in Google for the same duplicate content.

This phrase is an excerpt from a news story today and when I last checked there are 192 different web pages indexed by Google that have the same content.

In short, don't worry about it.

  • Don't worry about it. Google is not hard on content that is available on different websites, as one posted termed it as "syndicated" content. If your content is original and well linked then you'll be the top earner.
  • In short, you will still profit from that scenario.
  • Make yourself stand out by adding a comment form and entourage people to post comments. On that page the comments may be enough to make you unique and separate yourself from the crowd -- plus if your commenter use misspellings or other word synonyms they will show up on Google for those phrases.
