When does Google update? & New to SEO

Hi,

I just launched my website and I’m trying to figure this whole SEO thing out.
How long does it usually take before Google picks up new information for the site? I’m using wordpress and generated a sitemap and configured the all in one seo pack to the best of my abilities. But it seems that my changes don’t take place. The website can only be found if I type in the url in google and for the description of the website – what I wrote in the seo pack doesn’t show. Instead it gives info about my hosting provider. Is this a time issue – or have I done something wrong?

Also, since I’m new to seo. What would be a checklist that I need to go through to increase my ranking?

Backlinks I know. This referrers to writing my url on different websites and forums right?

Article marketing – Writing articles on blog and other blogs, right?
What else is there one can do?

    not just writing your url on other sites but making sure there is a link (good a href if you dont know what a link is).

    As for updating, it depends on how often google crawls your site, if you generated a site map it should've probably crawled it then but it doesnt guarantee that it will index all of your page (or any of it).

    Wait a week or so and keep adding unique content every day or so and you'll see it update. You'll have to work harder than that to get it up on page 1 though

      Well, it's not about putting in the hours it's knowing what I need to do.

      It's a rather small niche and the competitors are a bit tired I believe, so getting a good rank will not be super difficult hopefully.

      So it can take up to a week or more to get indexed you say? Interesting...

    yes, updating is no telling! it depends on the site you are posting on and how often google indexes that site! some times we need patients with all of this. Linking your site is key. good luck!

    Just keep on building links, and soon you will see your rankings increase. I would recommend social bookmarking if you have not done so already. Then you can do some profile links, blog comments, article submissions/marketing, web 2.0s, and maybe a press release depending on what type of site you have.

    don't obsess over it keep building your site with the basics mentioned and you will eventually get ranked if you deserve it. If your site is as new as you are describing you're going to have waiting period depending on how quickly your site develops

    Whenever you write unique content,try to keep the keyword in the permalink structure and in tags that helps in ranking.
