Domain Name SEO

Hi,

I am thinking of purcasing what I think is a good domain name but would like some advice first.

The keyword I want is "how to x.com" but that is gone so the option is to go for "how to x online.com" or "how to x blog.com" for example.

What I would like to know is how much of a difference does it make to Google if the domain name has an additional word in it.

    It depends. If the domain names that are exact keyword matches are SEO'd, then the chances they are going to rank high are very good indeed. It would take alot more work to outrank them. If they are not SEO'd, then it might be something to try for.

    Personally, if I can't get an exact domain match (including no dashes), then I move on.

    However, on another note, if the .com for exact match is taken and the .net or .org is available, and I find that .com is not ranking, I will grab them because they are the next easiest to rank.

    If you are going for long term and attacking this with a SEO plan, then the "how to x online.com" shouldn't be a problem.

    Exact Match Domains are great for SEO, however their effectiveness has been recently documented to hold less weight these days.

    It is definitely better to have the keyword in the domain then not, but it really depends I guess how much you are willing to shell out for that domain name and if the ROI will be worth it.

    Look at major sites like google, yahoo, ebay and so many others where the name.com has NOTHING to do with what they do. I think that providing good content, and promoting properly, with SEO etc. is much more important.

    If you CAN get "[keyword].com" then that's great. If not,then I think having the keyword in the title in some way such as keywordonline.com is fine. I think the main thing is to SEO and promote it well and ultimately, having the right service, product and content is the most important. IMHO.

      Thanks to all for the responses.

      I checked the main keyword and it is not ranked although all three top level domains are gone. None of them come up on the first page of Google.

      The domain is for a product I will be creating from PLR so I intend to put plenty of content up. I have to do some study on backlinks etc as I have never done SEO before so it's off to my C Drive to find an SEO course. I'm sure there is one in there somewhere :-) !

    go to Google search and type in the phrase and some ideas will dropdown as this is what people are searching for. I would use 'guide' or tips'.

    It will be fine, google places less weight onto the end of your domain name, so just go with whatever variation gets the most searches.

    Dave: There's all kinds of places on the net to find good and bad info about seo. Unfortunately there's more bad info than good out there these days. After years of doing seo I'd suggest one site to you for free on the net and that's the forum associated with Ihelp you dot com. I am not associated with them in anyway other than as a user of the site. But they have lots of great info there.

    My advice is if another ext is available for your chosen domain, go with that.. don't obfuscate your message by adding words just to get a .com

      That's what Matt Cutts said and yes you should since he works for Google. I think he was leaning more on brandable names instead keywords.

      Yes we should take note of it because it doesn't make
      sense for keyword domains to rank better and we have
      had it too good for a long time.

      However, this may be true for product related markets more..

      Hi Dave,

      it depends on what the market is as to what modifier
      you will use.

      In general you could try adding fast, 101, now. The
      shorter you keep it the better it is, so dont go for long
      keywords.

      Also make sure it is at the end where possible for
      maximum effect.
