I watched a video recently about link building.

They said that if you build backlinks from sites which aren't relevant to your niche then Google will slap your site if they find out about it. Is this correct? If so, does it apply to link building on both forums and blogs?

If this is the case then surely someone could just build non relevant backlinks to someone elses site to get them slapped so it seems a bit unfair.

I have always heard the non relevant links you just don't get as much power or juice as you would with relevant. I am not sure if Google actually punishes you. It is in your best interest to get niche backlinks.

Building back link theory is always under debate. No one really has the perfect answer for what google considers and what it punishes.
