There are a couple of views on this.

You need to change your permalinks to one of the following.

    /%postname%/

    or some say
    /%category%/%postname%/

    or even

    /%postname%.html/

All of these will output search engine friendly url's.

    Hope this helps

Go to Settings/Permalinks and select the radio button for custom permalinks and then add in /%category%/%postname%/
    Save changes
You should also configure All In One SEO with some information as well.

    All the best

Here is the link to some great Wordpress tutorials
I am currently following from Andy Williams of
      ezSEONews:

      Affiliate Minder (no affiliation)

It covers permalinks and how to arrange and optimize
pages using themes and keyword rich content and more.

      Hope this helps,

      Kevin

    Change the permalink to this:

    /%postname%.php

This should make your url SEO friendly.

Thanks Zubair, i am not too "bad" with WP, i just expected the URL options all in the SEO-plugin options (eg. coming from drupal)...
    But now i see clearer

Using category name / post name can cause duplicate content problems.

If you post an article in 2 or more categories, and have the premalink structure set to - /%category%/%postname%/ google will see the same article posted on your website under every category. This might be fine if you do not publish an article to more then one category.

Some of my articles, I have them under 1 - 5 different categories. So google could see that same article posted 1 - 5 times on my site with 1 - 5 different address's.

I have 3 wordpress sites. All I use is %postname% and that is it. So far it has worked out really well. 2 of the sites are on the first page of google in my exact nitch.

    Kev,

Thanks for the great tip. I am in the process of setting up my first wp blog and I was wondering about this. Having just the postname seems like a more targeted way to name the url anyway.

Anyone heard of Platinum SEO plugin? (as an alternative to all-in-one)

I use Platinum SEO plugin... It's better than the All-in-One. Just read the plugin home page to find out why.

Another thing to look out for if you change your structure on an existing site that already has rankings you need to be careful. What can happen is you can get a bunch of 404's because you changed the structure of your current links. There is a plugin for this but I can't remember the name for it exactly. You could probably find it on Google. Just something to think about.

well, that's easy, but some host you may need to configure .htaccess.
    file...

I will use /%category%/%postname%/ for permalink structure,

yes careful, if you change URLs on established sites! No problem in my case since the site(s) are not indexed yet. I am using %%postname%% now.

just installed it. It also has an option to do a 301 rewrite in case you changed permalinks.

I think i should FINALLY now have all essential plugins
