Experienced SEO people- optimize page or domain?

I have a site that offers service XYZ with a branded domain that doesn't contain the KW.

Say that the keyword I want to rank for "XYZ".

Is it easier to rank "www.domain.com" or the subpage, "www.domain.com/XYZ" for that keyword?

  • If your on page SEO is nicely targetted to that keyword then it would not make too much of a difference, but the subpage has a slight advantage due to the keyword.

If this term is all that your site is about, then I would just stick with the home domain and optimize it for that term.

Okay I'm gonna go with the page then. The site offers service A, service B and service C.

It would make sense to optimize domain.com/service A for the keyword 'service A'

    • Target the page (actually make it a post it will rank better) unless it is you main theme keyword for the site and then target the home page.

Keyword domains are going to be less powerful in the near future according to Matt Cutts
  • stick with domain and optimize it

    • Even though the domain doesn't contain the KW?

  • IMO, using keyword in domain name is better than using it as a folder or sub domain. I think in this case it ranks higher than other options.
