Question about SEO, 301 and a competitor

So here is the short version.
My competitor is kicking my rear in the SERPS. After digging around his backlinks heavily, I found out he using another domain and 301 the links to his main site.
So example
B Site link ---> A Site Link
My question now , is this strategy a good one or something I should stay away from ?
