One of the forums I follow is WebMasterWorld via RSS. Today they posted a rather interesting discussion about not becoming Google algorithm proof, but rather algorithm resistant.

I am algo proof Google SEO News and Discussion forum at WebmasterWorld

    Hi Marvin,

That's an interesting thread, but I think you can go much farther by not only becoming Google algorithm change resistant. Instead, shake off your dependency of traffic exclusively from search engines.

The fact is that most web traffic does not originate from search engines. Search engine traffic is just a fraction of where targeted traffic comes from. If you build traffic from a diverse group of sources you shake off your dependence on traffic from a single source.

What is important is targeted traffic. Many folks focus exclusively on search engine traffic and in doing so put their business in a perilous position. Search engines traffic makes up less than one third of all web traffic. Why do so many ignore two thirds of all their potential traffic?

For me, I just enjoy SEO more than spamming Twitter and Yahoo Answers

Yea I'd agree, but I hear what dburk is saying. I'd be interested to hear what techniques he uses?

      Hi Don,

I think the biggest reason for a concentration on search engine traffic is that for newbies, it is the easiest to explain and implement. And equally important, free tools are readily available to find out what people are searching for. And tracking isn't all that difficult when starting out.

It just doesn't take a lot of skill when first going after search engine traffic.

The availability of such tools is not the case (as far as I know) with the results for media buys, forum posting, email list marketing, etc. And these other methods of generating traffic imply that some method of tracking and testing needs to be in place to help remove just guessing on what is/is not working.

But all that said, I couldn't agree more with your statement about shaking off a total dependency on search engine traffic. That is too much like putting all our eggs in one basket. Especially when tipping over that basket is something that is out of our control.

Becoming resistant is something all of us need to think about. Isn't variety our key?
