301 Redirect Question

I have a website say abc.com with good amount of backlinks and PR 4. I have another website say xyz.com. I want to use xyz.com. Can a 301 redirect will help me to achieve the SERPs? I do not want to use abc.com as it is a country specific domain whereas xyz.com is general domain.

Also suggest if there are some better way to do this.
