I am going to start a muscle building blog, but first I want to do some SEO.

I know that you need keywords in your articles.

The questions are:

1. how do I get keywords

2. how many articles do I write with those keywords in them?

Thanks

Maybe you should look at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

I usually use this tool to find out which keyword to use in my articles and posts.

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal - this tool can provide you anything. Just keep on testing some keywords close to your topic and select the ones that have higher result.. But remember, the more popular the keyword is, more seo effort is needed.

From the tool result you can get an estimation what keywords are searched per month.

You only need to submit the keywords you have in mind, then the tool will suggest some more keywords along with the approx search per month.

For me, I follow on the google suggestion on the high search volume but not the ones with too high search volume - too much competition definitely, then I try it out on my articles and posts, last thing I do some off-page optimization on those articles/posts.

Nicely said solidsnake, the numbers shown in the approx volume search won't guarantee you'd get near the amount of visits to your articles, if you get even a third of that amount that would be great.

SEO effort is always needed to increase the amount of visitors.

I am going for long tail keywords.

I search them in google with and without quotes.

What are good search results. For example a long tail keyword without quotes that has 1,000,000 searches would not be a good keyword correct?

      Hi Max,

I hope you understand that if you search in Google the number you see in the upper right hand corner is NOT searches, it's the number of pages found that contain some or all of the words in your search term. Use the Adwords Keyword Tool to see how many searches there are. Be sure to select exact match if you want an accurate count.

It's OK to go for long tail keywords if they have sufficient search volume. If you are searching Google for the long tail keyword, without quotes will return tons of unrelated results, better to use quotes to see how many pages that are competing. You can also use allintitle:"keyword" to get an idea of how many pages are optimized already for your keyword.

Don't stop there, look very closely at the first page results, because you will not get much traffic if you cannot beat at least one of the competitors on page one. Study their on page optimization and backlinks. If you think you can do a better job than they have, go for it.

So for clarification: use Google AdWords Keyword Tool to check for search volume, and use Google search to study the first page results for the strength of your competitors. It really doesn't much how many competitors your keyword has, only that you can beat at least one of the top 20 for high volume searches and top 10 for lower volume searches.

After you get the estimated search volume you can go to a search engine like Google, and type in the keyword to see how many searches come up for that keyword.

Ideally you want to select keywords that are in demand, but have limited supply (lower number of searches in search engine like Google).

You also don't want to compete against sites that have hundreds or thousands of back links because it could take you a long time to get top page rankings ahead of those sites.

You also want to select long tail keywords as another member mentioned above.
There is less competition with the long tail keywords and also people who search for keywords that are very specific are more likely to buy what you are selling (note: here is an example of a long tail keyword.... rap music videos. You'd likely have more success promoting that keyword when compared to the keyword videos...because that is very general and it can take a long time to get dominant ranking with that term.

The more articles you write the better. The key is write articles with original content, and create an anchor text link back to your site with your keywords. e.g. if your keyword is purple flying monkey's the link that people see should say...purple flying monkeys, not e.g. purpleflyingmonkeys.com

    1. I would recommend using the Google Adwords keyword tool to answer your first question. Also be sure to check the number of competing sites against the traffic a keyword receives.

    2. This entirely depends on your work ethic. 5 articles a day is a manageable figure that will still bring significant results. The more articles the better your results.
