Different Results in Different Browsers

I am just trying to figure out why, when I search for a term in Firefox, then do the same search in Safari I get different results? It is generally the same top 10 websites but they move around their position.

Does anybody know why this happens? I thought I was checking with Google and the results would be the same regardless of how I searched.

      Hi Michael,

      Welcome to personalized search!

Google uses your previous search behavior to enhance your current search results. Since this data uses a cookie it will be slightly different for each browser and/or user account on your computer.

What's funny is that this new algorithm has a bunch of website owners walking around thinking they are SEO experts now that their "personalized" search results show their website on page one. They don't realize that it's just there for them and no one else sees their site in SERPs.

It's conceivable that every website owner in the world will find their own website listed in the top ten. How cool will that be?

Personalised search is only a really new thing so I should think it is other factors that are effecting the ranking. Moreover, you normally have to choose to promote your site if that is what you want to do. As earlier suggested as well, your rankings will be different in google.com compared to google.co.uk for example so check you are using the same one.

I didn't think it was personalized search as I have never actually promoted the website with those side buttons (up and the X).

I have been using Google.com in both browsers. I tried it on a different computer and got the same results. Very strange. At least it is only one spot difference.
