Hi guys,

Newbie here, I'm trying to find the best domain name for my site.

I target a keyword like:
flowers power
There are high searches with the plural version of flowers.
Well no I'm not a hippy, it's just an example

Of course the flowerspower domain is not available.

I found 2 domain names, with hyphens:
1/ power-flowers: exactly like my keyword, but not in the correct order. It doesn't make sense from a language point of view.

2/ flowers-powers: in the correct order, it makes sense for users, but according to Google Keywords Tool, nobody is searching the flowers-powers combination.

Which one would you suggest?

Thanks!

  • Just been looking into this myself funny enough. From what I can see some sites tend to rank well for both singular and plural, while others vanish as soon as you add or remove an 's' to the search. My guess would be that in those cases, the anchor text from their backlinks would not contain both plural and singular terms.
I don't think it's really worth worrying too much about. I'd personally go for the plural term in the url and then mix up the backinks anchor text.

I would go with option 2 "flowers-powers". Sure nobody is searching on that term yet. But you will get credit for both of the key words "flower" & "power". Plus it makes more sence when somebody reads the URL.

As the prior poster noted the back linking text is key to how it will show in the search engines as well. So as long as you backline Flower Power you should get lots of hits.

I got a new site lately "FlowerPowers" (using your example), I have done barely anything with it and it's ranking well for Flower Power already.

Take the flowers powers. It is better looking to have the URL match the site. Although I do have a site where I switched the main keywords around in the URL, and that site still does well. So it doesn't matter that much SEO-wise.

With hyphen will do just fine. As long as the keywords are in there. My domains all have hyphens and I am ranked top 10 in major search engines.

Honestly both choices look bad in my opinion. If you REALLY want to target Flowers Power, get FlowersPower.org, which would benefit from exact match and not look weaker from the hyphen. As SEO Moz has reported, .org holds its own in rankability.

Even if you were establishing a serious company on the domain, in which case .com would be far more ideal than .org, the hyphen kills the quality of both of those names and you'd be better off getting a non-exact match Flowers Power domain without hyphens.

Either one will work and I doubt one will have an SEO advantage over the other one.

Just make sure that your backlinks are high quality and focused on your actual keywords.

What I can suggest you is try to make some keyword phrases as well and according to that search for the domain name in some other domains also. In addition to that, I would like to suggest as possible just try to avoid use of hyphens in your domain name because most often User may forget to use hyphens and that may affect your direct traffic.
