I Know, Test, Test, Test... But In Your Experience...

Hi all,

I want to know what you think about image+text vs. text ads
only on Google Adsense. Some of the graphics are made quite
well but I am wondering if it is a distraction only.

I run a blog that has a wide skyscraper on each side
of the stories and sometimes it looks inconsistent
with text on one side and an image on the other.

Your thoughts.

Thanks.

I think the fact that you have 2 skyscrapers on each side may be
    the problem.

I would add a large box ad wrapped in the story.

I have never been a fan of any adsense on the right hand side.
Two reasons. That's the side people scroll on. That's ripe for
accidental clicks. Second, the right side gets cut off if people
resize the screen. Left side is always left intact.

But if it looks good to you, and you like it, I would change
both to text. Or, if you dare, change them to all image.

Yes indeed. It's all about testing, but you have to be patient.
test for 2 weeks, or at least a couple of days.

I've achieved a lot better results with text ads on side bars. But I'm sure people have experienced success with images as well.

Yes, at the end of the day, it's test test test

    Thanks for your response Paul...

Very insightful, and you make very good points!

I will keep those thoughts in mind!

    Thanks Steven,

I may go ahead and try Wide Skyscraper on left and
250x250? in the story I think and see how it goes.

I will even eliminate the right Wide Skyscraper as
Paul suggests and use text only for now.
I think it may work better.

I agree with Paul that you shouldn't have two skyscrapers, and that eliminating the right-hand side one is a correct choice.

With regard to image versus text, I know many people who swear by text only. There are studies floating around that say people are more likely to click on text links. However, I personally have had decent CTR with both images and text.. so it's definitely different depending on your site and what the ads are.

I would check out the ads which show up for your images and if it is relevant, than just use 1. I normally use just 2 text ads because they are usually much more relevant, but I use one of each for some of my sites.

You answered the question yourself. The ONLY way to know for sure is to split test image vs text ads and see the results. Make sure you are tracking conversions properly or you won't get that important data!

Some of the ringtone and file download websites have really nice image ads, but otherwise I would recommend text.
