Explaining SEO, to non-SEO people.

I'm interested in hearing how people market their SEO services to other businesses. From my experience, many small business owners and managers struggle to comprehend what SEO actually is. They get the most basic part that it will get their website ranked higher in Google, but they then want more details about what exactly we do, which is practically impossible to explain in non-technical terms. Getting them to part with money for something that all seems a bit hazy to them is not easy. I would be interested to hear how people explain SEO services to decision makers with no knowledge of this whatsoever.

I always take the less is more approach when explaining and try to start with the basics of getting them found on the SERPs. This seems to be the method almost everyone is familiar enough with in their daily lives. Then, go from there.

I don't think it is necessary to have to give away trade secrets of your company's SEO practices in order to land a client. Many don't want to be bothered with knowing the details otherwise they would be doing it themselves. Just start with the basics and let them lead the conversation.

Seems to work for me. Good luck!

I would tell them there is over 200 ranking factors in Googles algotherm. But basically what it comes down to is making sure that the onsite optimisation is carried out and then focusing on off site optimisation. Just give them examples: so on site opti is things like making sure there is an XML sitemap to Having the keywords at the start of the Meta Title and Meta Description. Offsite can be anything from social bookmarking to commenting in relevant forums to gain links which in turn generates trust from Google. Hope this helps.
