What importance has your server's geographic location for rankings?

I am hosting most of my sites in UK and see that in some niches i am basically dominating Google UK more than Google US - although my sites are all .com and targeting all English speaking costumers, mainly US.

I always wondered what role the physical hosting location plays in terms of rankings..and whether i would have better rankings in the USA with servers in the US.

Generally Yes. On the machine level the crawler can always identiify your relevance to a geographic location by IP but its not just your location but the location of pages linking to you. When I do SEO for UK clients I make sure that I get links form Uk based sites (domain TLd is a factor as well) and of course they are already Hosted on a UK IP.

I've actually seen some people on here deny this but I guess they don't do too much regional specific work. As you have seen Geo location in Google UK gives you a completely different serp result than say Google.com

Yes your assumption is accurate because nowadays, IP addresses of websites, their links as well as geographical locations of websites can have big impacts on their ranks. It is definitely possible to use a .com domain name and receiving most traffic from UK version of Google because domains extensions are not that vital when it comes to getting and establishing ranks, placements and positions on engines.

If you really are going to shift from UK to US traffic streams, attempt to make use of a reliable US based hosting company and continue gathering links from US hosted servers. Of course it is recommended bot to lose your current web visitors coming from UK and trying to improve your ranks in two fronts. using strong links, you will be able to do this, it's just the matter of time and constant work.

    Hi George

If I am targeting the UK I always have my sites hosted in the UK, if I am targeting US I host in the US.
Remember to also put down the country you are targeting in your Google webmaster tools

    I hope this helps
