Exact Match Keyword Domain

Hey Warriors....How important is it to have an exact match keyword/domain name?

I always try to get a domain name that exactly matches my main target keyword, but if it is already taken then what about adding an extra word on to the end of it? Are keyword domains with an extra word just as good or not?

For example: If my keyword is "fast train" and all the exact domains for that keyword are taken like fasttrain.com, fasttrain.net etc..

How good would say "fasttraintracks.com" be if I was still targeting "fast train" as my primary keyword?

Is it worth adding this extra word or is it better to find another exact match all together?

Your thoughts, ideas, opinions and facts would be much appreciated...thx

its very important for a new site, and will help in rankings for sure.

add -, or a word like you said.

google gives preference to domains with the keyword in the url, and seems the closer the keyword is to the start of the domain the better

    ex

    mysite.com/fasttrains
    would be less favorable than
    fasttrains.com

all things equal if 2 sites competing for the exact key phrase, have the exact inbound links, keywords, description content etc, the one with the better domain wins ( theoretically )

Another twist to this would be...the keywords "niche market research" which has zero exact search results but the keyword "niche market" has 9900 exact global monthly searches and "market research" has 74000 exact global monthly searches so is "niche market research" any good?

Even tho "niche market research" has zero search, I would still rate it because of the high searches it has when it's split up....Would you agree with this?

From my own experience having your keyword in your domain is critical for niche sites but if you can't get an exact match don't sweat it too much.

You can still rank very easily if you are doing proper SEO.

        Here is my advice:

        1) NEVER put anything in front of your keyword. Google reads left to right so you want your keyword to be the first thing it sees.

        2) Hyphens are ok in Google's eyes but ugly to your visitor. I avoid them.

        3) Try a "stop" word if you like. "x" works well. If mykeyword.com isn't available try www.mykeywordx.com. Google doesn't pay attention to "stop" words anyway.

        4) If all else fails, I like to use suffixes such as review, bonus, exposed, revealed, etc etc.

Hope that helps at least a little!

    • Yes i'd agree with the earlier comment above about adding an 'x' to the end of the domain if they one you want is already taken. I.e. fasttrainx.com

I think the "Panda" update did change a lot the influence of the domain name in big G algorythm, so it may be not as much important as it used to be.

      I disagree 100%

actually i know for sure thats not true.

Had a client 5 weeks ago with a pr4 site, was on page 4 for the keyword with the most traffic in the niche. We changed there domain name, did a 301 to the new name, that was keyword rich, within 2 weeks they were number 1 without any other changes. So Google defiantly takes domain name into account, how much no one really knows, but its defiantly something you don't want to ignore. The client went from 1% of traffic coming from search, and is now at 40% with a increase of 130 unique visors per day with such a simple change. We have since made other changes and they are ranking for multiple key-phrases ( all of which have words that are in the domain name partially), but it does show Google takes domain names into account. Its not a silver bullet by any strech of the imagination, but it defiantly does help.

I really love helping out those clients, they have a decent pr, page has good links and decent seo . with a few small changes they see as close to instant results your going to get from google. Much better than starting a linking campaign that is a long slow tedious process. Im an instant results kinda guy myself lol
