Question about H1 tags

Here goes another question that will show how much I'm still a newbie.

I've had a few Wordpress websites for a year now but just now am learning about h1-h6 tags.

I've looked at some youtube videos and have done some reading, but I can't figure how to insert these tags. One video showed going to a "format" function in Wordpress, but I can't find this on my dashboard. Is it called something else in the later versions of Wordpress?

Or am I just supposed to open up the html editor and insert these tags around headings just like I do "<b></b>" around words?

Another question I have is if I use All in One SEO Plug-in, do I still need to put in these tags?

Thanks to whoever will clue me in here.

  • You need to be in the "Visual" screen not "HTML". You might need to expand your wysiwyg menu (kitchen sink icon on the far right).

Highlight the text you want to edit, then click on the "Paragraph" drop down and select the appropriate tags. Note that some themes use the post title as H1 some as H2. View the source code to see which is being used (right click on the page away from an image).

The SEO plugin is supposed to grab your post/page title and description by default (I think), but I always enter that info manually. From what I understand Google will grab that most of the time. But no it won't insert the tags you're talking about.

    • Thank you so much; your info was just what I needed.

One more question. Is it okay to attach the H1 tag to the title of your page, or are these tags only for headings in the body of your page? By page, I'm talking about static pages, not pages of posts.

  • Just some advice: just use 1 set of h1 per tag, then h2 and lower for the rest.
