Is it better to have all backlinking go to my main url, all of it go to locations (blog entries or forum posts or whatever) on my site or a mix of both?

If a mix of both is best, should more be done for one or the other?

Thanks!

Mix it, some to your main page, some to your internal pages (your posts).
Also don't put one keyword in every link

Think of it as each page being an individual site of its own when backlinking. They all need (internal + external) links to help support them.

If nothing links to a page it must not be worthy of a link.

It depends on your keyword selection. If you are doing linkbuilding for main keywords then use it for Home Page and less important keywords should be linked for internal pages.

    Thanks

Well, you should have one main keyword to focus on, while you should also have a couple of general keyword related to your site, farmed internally at your site, while the major keyword should be sounds enough farmed at your main url..

Hey Man, see you should have one Primary Keyword for your domain and you should try and rank for it. After that come the secondary Keywords i.e. your subdomains, you should make backlinks for them too because naturally you want to rank as many subdomains as you can and captcher as many Keywords as you can.

Naturally later on you will start treating every subdomain as a indivisual site!

    Good Luck Man,
Contact me if you need any SEO services, I will more than happy to help.

    Regards,
    Shiva

Hey Seatbelt99. here's a gold for ya... Divide your focus with a plan.

The way i do on my sites are..

    Step1:

If I want to rank "dog training" for my main page, I'll have a main page and write up maybe 10-20 posts in my site and have them all internally linked to my main page with a very tight keyword group.
(eg. 60% internal links will link to my main site with "dog training" & the rest 40% will be splintered with "dogs training", "training a dog", "training dog" etc)

    Step 2:

Build links with the 70-30 rule, 70% of external backlinks will go to your main page with the EXACT keyword and 30% of external backlinks will be splintered across your internal posts.

Of course, i'm not saying that my method is 100% guaranteed but so far it works for me. Some of you here might have a better way of doing it but the way i'm doing it keep everything systemized, it's especially useful if you have writers because all they have to do is follow the plan you made. and there it goes - Autopilot backlinks.

    Cheers.

    Joe

If you ask me, I usually build links more to the homepage by concentrating 5 to 6 keywords to it. And of course, I build links to inner posts (Not many). Try to include perfect interlinking in your content.
