A Heads-up for Newbie Like Me

I met a huge problem recently, a few weeks ago I found both my website's url(with www one and without www one) poped up to the first page on SERP. At first I felt so lost because I did everything DreamHost and Godaddy told me(Yes, I bought domain from Godaddy and host from DreamHost), why did that happen? And before I figured the problem out both two urls lost their ranks and basically can't find in front 100 pages.
I asked so many people then I knew I should left Only One url to make sure my website get higher PageRank and avoid potential punishedment from Search Engine due to duplicated contents(two url technically means two different websites to search engine). So I did 301 redirect let my domain a.com redirect to www.a.com and now my website's rank start getting back. So if there are newbies like me, choose one url for your website now and either remove another one or redirect another one, ASAP!
