Everything that I am searching for, the .com is gone. What would be the next best option? .net/.org/etc?

thanks
#extension

You could just try putting a random letter on the end of your domain eg, yourdomainx.com
      It has worked for me.

I prefer .org over .net, but that's just IMO. It also depends on what type of site you're creating.

  • Most people will tell you .net, but I've never had a problem with ranking any extensions. .us .cc .info I've even used .nu a number of times. They all work the same search engine-wise. It's just a matter of whether people will remember to type in your extension, rather than the more-common .com

Also, if the domain name you are seeking has more than one word, have you tried hyphenating?

You are right. I know that i myself almost never put any other extension except .com. If the site doesn't show up then I might do a search on google to find out which extension it was.

I have to decide either I should go with .net/.org or a hyphen.

So, I think I should change the tread to should it be .net/.org or hyphen. Which one would be more likely to remember by user?

I try to use the extension that is most suitable for my site and it has worked really well. If you feel that .com is the most suitable then you should play around with keywords to see if you can get something different or go for something interesting and brandable instead that will allow you to have .com

.com is never gone ... either you brainstorm a name in .com or buy it from the holder. But you have the option to use the .net and .org which still has power and better if the .com is parked then you have a better chance in ranking in .net or .org - of course, according to Matt Cutts of Google, "Keywords is not necessary in ranking".

.com is never gone..you can also use dashes

your seo is what's key to the rankings...it's not necessary to get a domain that's easy to remember...i'll put it this way

would you rather have a domain that's easy to remember and depend on that for traffic?...or.....a domain that's not easy to remmeber, but has excellent on/off page seo?

easy to rememeber doesn't matter when your seo is smokin'

If you are running your website globally, the next best extension after .com would be .net, however, if you get .co domain, you can also choose it. If you are running an organizational website, you can choose .org.

If your into flipping websites, the .com will bring more money than the other extensions. If you really want the .com use hyphens. Your on-page and off page SEO matters the most.

I like .org best after the .com. I don't know why, but it seems to work better for me.

.net is generally the second best choice and .org is associated (not officially) with non-profit organizations. .info? ugh. Yes, you can rank with it but it's a bit more work in some cases.

      Hyperbole?

Have proof? I rank just as fast with any domain extension including .biz and .info

As have I, just with more work in terms of time afforded to get indexed. .coms get indexed fast, IMO. Proof? Well, yes, but not willing to share what is generating my income. It can be done, even with a .cc/.co, just easier with .com, especially with type-in traffic. People naturally gravitate to .com as the default.

This question is impossible to answer not knowing your full intentions.

Answer this first - Why did you want the dot com?

Are you branding? Or are you just looking for a kw rich domain?

If you are trying to do some branding, then I hate to say nothing else will be the best extension.

If you are looking to just get a kw rich domain, then pretty much any extension will do.

If .com is gone, I'd flip my coin and pick .net or .org (for fun). Always hope they're gone though so I could pick .info! Don't think it matters really.

Got to agree with Jill 100% on that one...

If you're looking to enhance/create your brand, then your best bet is to brainstorm and come up with a different domain name that has a .com available (something catchy, too - just my personal opinion)

But if you're looking for a keyword rich domain, then just about any extension will work.

I agree, you should examine the site you are creating and find a URL that fits the needs. For example, if it is a site that is going to host a series of videos you might go with .tv; or if it is an education site then .edu... you get the picture. It sounds like you might want to just go with a different name that gives you the .com.

If your domain is going to be a brand name of your business, than .com is highly recommended.
