Proper Use of Header Tags

I'm trying to avoid using h1 tags on a few of my sites when writing articles as it just looks HUGE (like at least twice the size of the article title) so I instead opt for h2 or below.

Will this hurt me a lot in terms of on page SEO? I understand that the answer is probably to a certain degree, but I want to strike for a healthy balance for humans and search engines in terms of website layout.

Or perhaps I should just change themes.:rolleyes:

  • it won't heart your SEO, I don't use H1, H2 tags at all and it is totally fine

    I think h2 will be fine....Google will still see it as a title...try bolding the keyword in the article body as well....

  • try h1 once and h2 twice. h1 denotes main topic of webpage. h2 denotes sub category of your webpage.
  • You don't need to switch themes entirely to make your h1 tags smaller. All you need to do is modify the CSS. PM me for details if you're interested.

      Try this, it should change your h1 tag to size 11. If you want another size, just substitute the 11px with the size you want.

  • This is fine if you want to resize one particular h1, but to resize all of them automatically, you should be editing your style.css file.
  • Well since no engine will ever tell you their true formula, ranking, etc. you have to rely somewhat on the past experiences of others; and we all know that opinions are like .... well, you probably know the rest ....

    Personally, I following much the same principles as you've outlined.

    I try to use heading in the same way I would outline a written document:

    h1 - title
    h2 - main point
    p - content
    h3 - sub points/heading
    p - content

    The difference for me though, is that I don't use my site name or title per see in the H1, but rather a good, descriptive title of the page; i.e. not "My Site Name" but, "Elvis Presley", then the H2 might be "Biography" etc. making use of keywords that also aid the reader/viewer in flowing easily through the page.
