Outgoing links, redirect - SEO?

In SEO there is an understanding that outgoing links take away the so called link juce, and thus it's best to have as few outgoing links as possible. How serious is it and should we take measures against it?

As I understand, one way to escape this, is using temporary redirect. Also, what redirect is the best to use? The module I'm using, allows the following redirects: 300 Multiple Choices; 301 Moved Permanently; 302 Found; 303 See Other; 304 Not Modified; 305 Use Proxy; 307 Temporary Redirect
What exactly are they and what is the best to use?

    Sunray,

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to ask, but having outbound links from your website to other websites are EXTREMELY important.

With the latest Google slap there were a lot of article sites and low content sites that took a back seat in rankings. How can you prevent this from happening? Make sure you have good content with a ton of outbound links.

A perfect example would be take a look at Wikipedia. Why is it that Wikipedia always ranks so well? Because they offer good content with a ton of backlinks going out to other parts of Wikipedia and backlinks going out to other websites.

Hope this helps and hope this answers your question...

      Hi sunray,

Outbound links do not take away link juice. The link juice a page passes is divided equally among all of the outbound links. The best way to realize the value in your own pages's link juice is by choosing useful outbound links.

None of the HTML redirect methods will prevent the passing of link juice to an outbound link in a positive way. You can use JavaScript redirects or the nofollow attribute to prevent the passing of link juice, however the benefits probably won't out way the consequences.

Google probably pushes some sites intentionally forward: such as government sites, universities, Wikipedia. That is the first reason. And secondly, of course, Wikipedia has tons and tons of links pointing to literally every page it has.

If just putting links in a page increased pagerank, it would be too easy to manipulate and get your high rank. They simply couldn't do that.
What I have heard, is the opposite: if you place too many links on your site, they suck away all the pagerank.

Outgoing links from your site are not bad
Normal site will always have a few of them, linking to sites the webmaster like or think that they are useful for his readers.

It's also good to link to some authority site that is related to you website topic. It can help your site.

Thanks David I was looking for this info via search and ended up joining warrior forum when I found your post :-))

I think as the normal course of inviting guest authors, our sites should always be allowing 2 or 3 outbound links (and not redirects and preferably dofollow) to the authors chosen sites/posts. As site owner it is up to us to make sure they go out to relevent and ethical sites so we shouldn't get penalized for linking out to a bad site. The use of a broken link checker is invaluable to notify you of any sites that go down or posts that they simply trash for whatever reason. You can just unlink the broken link then and protect yourself from outbound dead ends.

I believe its ok to have as many as 100 on a page (sounds a lot eh?) which I can only presume includes outbound links in sidebars.
