Please help! How should I structure the content on my blog?

I recently created a niche blog that I'd like to ultimately monetize with AdSense. My issue: I'm having trouble when it comes to how many keywords to focus my content and the site structure I should use. It's a wordpress blog. At the onset, my goal is really only to rank for one particular keyword.

For a standard static website (i.e., non-blog), as I understand it, it's best practice to focus each page on a single keyword. But with a blog, there really isn't a homepage, which would be the logical place for me to focus on my primary term. As we all know, a blog's homepage is just where the recent posts etc are dynamically presented.

So if I want the homepage of my blog to rank for a particular term, what's the best way to structure the site, write content with keyword focus, and internally link to make sure that happens?

Thanks so much for your advice!

Home Page - Seed Keyword (e.g. car)
    Category Pages - car loan
Single Pages - car loan comparison

The is the best practice. After the keyword research, you should have the site structure anyway.

Set up a static page (WP > Pages) built around the main keyword, as TomKane says, then set that as the home page of the blog (WP > Settings).

Pull people into the posts through your navigation, and of course they will find their way to individual posts through searches on specific keywords.

Thanks so much, guys. All worked like a charm.

So in this case, would it be better for me to have Pages instead of Posts? And each Page targets a slightly deeper (i.e., long tail) version of the seed keyword?

Should the the exact seed keyword be in all deeper terms that I target on deeper pages? I ask because my target keyword is three words, which makes it difficult to modify much more.

        Thanks so much!
