Just a quick question I can't seem to find the answer to.

If a company subscribes to a directory and pays for expanded services does your link to your web site or product become considered non organic or a paid link and become at risk of suffering a penalty.

Kind Regards

  • First of all, the classification as to organic or non-organic only has to do with payment to the search engines e.g. Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing, Microsoft AdCentre etc and not to sources of getting the backlinks. If you pay any company to get links, if the web page on which your link is placed ranks highly in the SERP's, it will still appear in organic listings of the SERP's.

Hence the answer to your question is that the link to your site or product falls under organic listings.

Regarding your second question, it is not all payments for links that Google penalizes. First of all, if the number of paid links is not material in volume, it will not draw the attention of Google.

Secondly, the source of getting the paid links i.e. link farms is very crucial in Google classifying it as one to be put on the watch list and hence due for penalty.

The usual directories such as Yahoo, DMOZ etc are in the course of their normal accepted businesses and payments to them will not draw the ire of Google. Their intention is usually not to influence rankings. Paid links gotten from less reputable directories may however not receive such favorable treatment.

Hence the answer to your second question is that, yes, it is a paid link but given the source, it is unlikely to draw the ire of Google.
  • It is a paid link
  • Thanks for the infomation
  • It will not be a paid link because on quality directory you pay for the review not the link if your site or link is not quality enough on quality directories will be rejected. But we must check directories before submit.
  • Back links on directory is good idea for everyone to optimize there sites and it is also growing day by day.
