I don't consider myself an SEO expert, but in my opinion...Sizzling HOT, Up-to-the-Minute, Link-Bait Content...Nothing else even comes close...

In my opinion, the most important ranking factors are increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to your pages, and use of good unique content.

Backlinks. With the right backlinks any website can rank for extremely competitive terms even with completely awful on page SEO. Pay attention to the websites that rank for the hyper-competitive keywords, sometimes they're a complete train wreck (done in flash, no on page SEO done, poor layout, slow server, etc.) but still rank well.

You want to know why? Because they have either extremely powerful backlinks or a high, high number of total inbound links.

THANK YOU ... if I hear one more person talk about content I'm going to puke. SEO is spelled L-I-N-K-S. The only thing that changes with algo updates is they demand a higher quality of links. If you have them to begin with then you're good to go.

        Exactly.

Also, link baiting and SAPE aren't ranking factors.

If i had to narrow it down to just two, i'd still go with relevancy and PR. I can't see you needing anything other than that for killing most niches.

With Panda and Penguin out, I think you need to focus on quality content and quality backlinks. Ranking these days mean you do not just focus on ranking in search engines but also you need to consider your audience/readers by making good and quality contents and building your site around quality links.

Relevancy and PR. Give me those two and I'll rank all over your "quality" 500 word essays. With a blank page at that.

I agree with Dennis. Relevant links and good PR will outrank anything.

Content has always been about pleasing your audience. It has nothing to do with pleasing Google.

    Content is the king.

Good content is the number one ranking factor in the eyes of search engines. Every thing comes after that, including but not limited to social signals, PR, backlinks etc.

Website authority is king. -- not content. A news magazine (Forbes) publishes one article on my topic and it knocks out all the competition (a high competition keyword). They have 6 backlinks listed in Google (facebook and a few others).

I think the most important is the content. It's one main factor why visitors get interested with you and your company. They want to know your services and how you do things. Good content established credibility and shows your expertise as well.

High related content on the website and high PR backlinks is the winning formula. The more relevancy on the website the less links you need to rank.

For example if you have a lawnmower review site with only 5 pages or 50 pages then the 50 page site will rank much easier. That's why I always build sites around one single product group. Just more cost efficient as well as a site with tons of bottom page one or page two rankings isn't bringing in much traffic.
