Using the google keyword tool, on an exact match with these two example keywords.
"weight loss ebook" with 200 monthly searches and "the weight loss ebook" 100 monthly searches
If i were to use "the weight loss ebook" would it add up to 300 monthly searches?

  • EMD's domaining is intended to get you ranked quickly for the keyword phrase in the domain name. If you were to register theweightlossebook.com you would be targeting 100 visitors a month.

Since position #1 gets 40% of the traffic and assuming you can reach #1, you are looking at 40 visitors a month. If your site converts at 2%, you will get around 9 sales a year.

      Hi daveyace,

Just to let you know that Charles did actually answer your question but perhaps not in the most direct way you may have liked! :p

Seriously? I just told you that you were targeting 100 visitors - not 200 not 300.

You will only rank (potentially) for the exact keyword phrase. All other phrases will require further SEO and longer time to get ranked. If the other phrases already have exact match domains ranking, you have no chance.

It all depends on how much you do SEO-wise. Your domain name could be sdfdsfsdnsdjnfds.com but with a well planned SEO strategy you can rank it for all kinds of keywords even though the domain isn't keyword rich.

Google sees spaces in keywords (ebook vs e book) and prefixes like 'the' as different keywords. The word "the" is a stop word though and filtered out of search queries automatically so ranking for both "weight loss ebook" and "the weight loss ebook" shouldn't be difficult at all with solid on page SEO and some high quality link building.

If your question is about the exact match domain benefit the 100% keyword rich version is going to be easiest to rank for but the modified versions of the keyword (the weight loss ebook vs. weight loss ebook) usually aren't hard to rank for as well. Using the domain name with the prefix isn't a terrible idea though - your domain name would still hold a high keyword density if you used theweightlossebook.com instead of weightlossebook.com.

If it was me I would choose the domain with the higher search volume.

I think there is some confusion in this thread. The OP is trying to ask if you have the option between "keyword1" and "thekeyword1", if you should focus on "thekeyword1" because you are simultaneously targeting "keyword1" because it is part of the phrase "thekeyword1", and thus getting the traffic for both.

In my opinion, by targeting "thekeyword1" you will be losing some of the traffic you would have gotten if you had targeted simply "keyword1", but not all of it. It's not as cut-and-dry as getting 100 vs 200 vs 300; you might rank a little lower than you would have for "keyword1" and a lot higher for "thekeyword1", with the operative question being what is the difference in traffic - and the answer to this question varies based on your keyword.

I would love to hear the opinion of someone who has done some split testing with this.

Ah...that is much better. Here is what I would do
Title Tag "Wieght Loss Ebook|Crafty Text|Brand
Page title "The Weghtloss ebook of the Century: What the Experts arent telling you
Bold "Weight Loss Ebook" in the first paragraph.
H2 Back To Weight Loss Ebook, but with variation. Maybe "#1 Weight Loss Ebbok on the Market
Underline an instance of "the weight loss ebook" toward the end.

Build backlinks with the two phrases plus the name of your website. For your purposes, targeting longer tail phrases will cause you to accidentally target a lot of different phrases.

Although there was some confusion from Charles's answer early on in this thread, his last reply answers your question. It is a bit simple to say keyword + thekeyword = X amount of searches. In reality there are a whole mixture of long tails and other keywords a web page will get indexed for.

However, by optimising your web page in the way Charles stated in his last post, you give your web page a good chance of getting ranked higher for those two keywords.

Keyword tool is an estimations only. It is never accurate.

Remember it is going to be mostly about your anchor text. Focut your anchor on the main KW as "weight loss ebook" and it will cover most variations in SERP. Though adding "the" in your on page opt will help.

Remember to VARY you anchors too.
