But for a sniper site you're probably not going to have the type of content that is going to draw links. So get somebody to run some senuke blasts, or do some article submissions etc.

Updating your content from time to time is pretty important. You don't need to go nuts. Maybe just a unique, keyword focused article or two a week. (If you're building a content site.)

I suggest you do both. If you want to have better results, do both.

I will vote for backlinks. Of course your current content must be of some standard not some low quality duplicate content. Even you have very good content with no backlinks you will still not rank.

My experience, For a Sniper site Profile Backlinks work very well, they just make you shoot up and up and many of my customer's website jumped to page 1, they had sniper's website!

EDU links and GOV links hold same weight as normal links.. Matt Cutts says this in one of this videos.

Have decent content and then build a bunch of links. I doubt your content is good enough for link baiting, so just make it decent and leave it.

Everybody wants to be #1 whatever that means. But even when they get to the elusive #1 based on whatever they think that is... they still can't figure out how to make money.

Because links mean nothing and content means nothing.

What matters is matching user intentions to product/services and making damn sure you know how to create VALUE for your visitors... otherwise they just leave, #1 or not.

Both is the correct answer, but you need backlinks for your site to grow, and new content to get returning visitors, and improve SEO.

I would do both

Post unique, relevant and interesting content to your site, at least twice a month, this way your site will always appear fresh to the search engines.

And keep building backlinks from different types of websites like web 2.0 sites, blogs posts, video sharing sites, press releases, directories, forums etc. Not only from article directories.

Both are very much need for ranking any kind of keywords in major search engines.

First you need to build your site with good, quality and fresh keyword rich content in your site, and later you need to work for backlinks. So it is first the content which matters a lot. You can achieve good ranking sooner for long tail keywords and for the high volumes you need to work continuously to effect the rankings in SERP.

If you only have to win the SERP and the bounce rate is not imporatnt than we should go for the backlink. But as in the google is not the content is king then we go for the content. Often the content updation google keeps visitors happy and also pleased that our main objective. Conclusion and the content have won the game.

Backlinks will make your site move. Content is good, because it will make other webmasters link back to you. At the end of the day, the main goal is to get anchor text backlinks pointing to your site.

Why not both? If you absolutely HAVE to choose, I would recommend links as well, but if at all possible, go with content AND links. You can have one article written, and spun and submit that all over the net with a program like SenukeX or Serpassist.

It's difficult to rank better, if you are doing only article posting. So you have to follow other off page methods for building more back links.

I think there is no comparison to be done with those two SEO methods. You should do both. Content will determine what your site is all about, and backlinks will help your sit to rank.

You need to concentrate on both

When it comes to getting on top of google, you must do both. Backlinks from high PR websites will increase your page rank and make google think you are a top dog. I usually go only for PR 4 and higher and I try to get as many ".edu and .gov" backlinks as possible.

As far as content, you must write good content so more pages are indexed in google giving you a better chance to rank for a keyword. Also, what is cool about content is if you truley write good content ( not spun articles) other websites in your niche will link to you creating back links for you. Be sure to keep up your keyword density for your articles and produce good original content for your site. Another thing to remember is that you want to increase your page rank as well by posting new content every day or as much as you can. This may get old after a while but its worth it.
