Why does this happen?

Hello all...

I've now seen this type of activity on a few different sites. Has anyone experienced these types of ups and downs on a relatively new site? I'm inclined to chalk it up to the dance but I wanted to hear others' opinions.

What I noticed is that a new site (less than 2 months old) will generally take 1-2 weeks to begin ranking for my targeted keywords. Traffic will the ramp up significantly for a week or two (for dozens of different pages). Then, suddenly, all pages lose their rankings (all at the same time).

This activity makes me think it's a penalty of some sort but my WebMaster Tools never indicate any violations.

Anyone have any experience with this type of site behavior?

I've seen sites do this often.. they move up in a niche, start to rank and bring in some traffic..

    then....

Manual review... could possibly be the case.

You know, I've wondered if that might be the case. However, the sites I've seen this happen with are decent sites. Lots of content, well designed, no scraped content, unique information, etc. The sites I see this happen with are sites that have even been approved by the AdWords team after their own manual review.

I suppose it is possible though, I guess.
