Is it good or bad to put backlinks on old, inactive sites?

How's everybody doing.

I have a question regarding backlinks on old websites that are no longer active.

Over the years of creating and dumping websites, I have a lot of properties (mostly Wordpress blogs) that are just sitting online. They haven't been updated in at least a year, some of them 2-years. However, they still hold Pageranks.

Is it wise to implement a sitewide link in the footer or sidebar of one of these older properties and direct it to one of my newer sites, or would I only be hurting myself in doing so? I wouldn't do it on all the sites. Maybe just the one with the highest pagerank.

Any input you can give me on this would help. Thanks.

    Why would it harm you? if it has pagerank then it benefits you. imo

      I also forgot to mention, these sites are all on the same server, but each one has it's own unique IP.

      It's to my understanding that as long as they have unique IP's it won't appear as if it's a bunch of sites on one server all linking to eachother.

    Age is a good thing Doesn't matter if they haven't been updated. I'd probably not do a sitewide footer/sidebar link though as those risk being discounted if they look unnatural. How about writing a new article and including your link in that?

    Unique IPs are good, though they should be in separate C-classes as well to be on the safe side.

      I'm not quite sure what a c-class is.

      As far as the link goes, I could possibly write a new article and include the link in that, but in that case won't the link have little to no value since the article holds no Pagerank? Don't I won't the link on a Pageranked page?

    I have another question aside from the one I asked above about putting the link in a new post with no pagerank.

    It's been mentioned that putting a sitewide link in the footer or sidebar could be risky. Why is that so? Could it potentially hurt my website if a bunch of different sites add my website to their "blogroll" or "favorite sites"? Wouldn't putting a sitewide link on my old site back to the site basically be the same as some anonymous user adding me to their blogroll?

    Putting a sitewide isn't going to hurt you necessarily but it could cause your existing sites to lose their PR (just happened to me one a PR3 after adding a sitewide it dropped to a zero).
