Hi guys,

I have a few pages with long permalinks which i want to cut down, The page is indexed but has no backlinks.

So just wondered if theres going to be a problem with the new page with the new permalink ?

Just to explain alitttle better ..

The page has a long permalink which i want to cut down to just the keywords, The page is indexed in google but has no backlinks pointing to it.

If i cut the permalink down to the keywords i understand it would be like creating a new page but what about the old index in google ? if i change the permalink if someone clicks no the old page in the index they are going to find the `page not found` link.

So would google reindex the new page witht the new permalink ? And if i started to backlink it would i be able to rank it ?

Or if i changed the permalink would the old page in googles index just be the same with a new shorter permalink ?

Please advice

thanks Jim

      Hi,
Yes i could add a WP plugin that would do this and if the pages had any backlinks i would be doing this

But as i haven`t got any backlinks pointing to these pages that i want to cut the permalink down on there isn`t any juice to pass on, i just wanted to clean the page up with a short correct permalink.

I just keep think about the fact that the page is indexed and if i change the permalink what happens to the page in the index ? does it go to the `page not found` if clicked on ? And then what about the page after i add the new permalink is it then reindexed ? so i have the old page witht the old permalink in the index along with the same page with the new permalink ??

If you have any pages that linked to this "long permalink page", it will appeared as "broken link"

But since you say you do not have any backlink pointing to this "long permalink page". It's safe!!

Just change the permalink from wordpress and resubmit your website to all search engine.

About the confusion, a simple explaination is that when Google crawl your site again, all broken link will be de-indexed, and no longer user will search for these "Page no found" pages.

Edit: You don't need the redirection already, since no backlink is point to this "long permalink page"

Ok thanks so the old page in the index will just become a broken link and the page with the new permalink will start to show up in the index ? You know what i might just leave it as it is and never create a long permalink again ! I am just thinking about the reindex ect ect could it be classed as dup content or any other problems with ranking ?
Forget it i`m going to leave it as it is

          thanks for the advice

No it will not become a broken link, broken link was created just when there are pages that link to this page.

Yup, it will not classed as duplicate content nor any other problem.
You'll just need to resubmit your website to Google and this will settle all problem.
