Joomla or Wordpress

I prefer Joomla. I think it's easier to manage more types of content.

I Effing hate these threads... because tons of inexperienced people overall will speak so many wonderful things about how wordpress is absolutely the best there is, but it isn't.

They are both good for SEO... neither one will hurt you. You just need SEF urls on joomla, that is all. Anyone that does SEO will tell you, there is no advantage to one over the other, that the advantage is whoever you use for SEO.

Yes... there are extensions for Joomla.... Yes, there are extensions for wordpress.... Which one is better for SEO? Neither.... Which one is more flexible? Joomla.... which one is easiest to learn? Wordpress.

People will say Google loves wordpress... that isn't true at all. Wordpress is a blog platform, and google loves fresh content. Blogs typically get updated often and therefore have fresh content, which google likes. A blog on Joomla will do just as well as a blog on Wordpress.

In Joomla you have to download components (paid) and has a learning curve to set it up !

I tried Joomla and didnt like it at all. I use wordpress exclusively now and thinks its the best as long as you can modify php and HTML code. Its definitely a personal preference thing though.

I've never even used Joomla. Why? Because Wordpress does the job for me and does it well. I feel comfortable with Wordpress. There are probably a million others who feel the same about Joomla. Find a CMS that works for YOU, not what works for others.

I use WordPress in most cases because I find it easier for me to work with. With that said Joomla and WordPress will be the same in SEO ability, the better question is who is going to be writing your content and do they have the experience its going to take to create and input the content correctly.

Wordpress is no longer just a blog platform. This is where its roots are but I find it to do just about anything I need.

I'm with Wordpress. It really is easy to produce a professional looking site in not very long at all. It gets even better if you can dabble in the code to make the site your own.

I use both. My highest traffic site is based on Joomla.

What I don't like about Joomla is poor comment integration and it's more difficult to keep up to date although updates come at a much slower rate than WordPress.

Joomla is much more flexible in CMS data manipulation.

Most people who are doing online Marketing will do fine with WordPress and the learning curve is not as steep. They are actually very different products.

One advantage for me is the plugin architecture of WordPress seems to be more developed and easier to implement, especially in regards to useful free plugins.

There also seems to be a wider variety of templates in the WordPress realm.

As long as a CMS doesn't cause problems for bots to crawl there should be no difference from an SEO standpoint as SEO is a function of content and links, but to a lesser degree if the content is pushed too low for what the search crawlers see it can affect how deep they will crawl, at least this used to be the case when you could manipulate old HTML sites to increase the proximity relevancy of content... meaning Google will give more weight to content at the top of an article vs the bottom of an article.

SEOwise, WordPress is more suitable especially with it's customization URLs and pinging property. aside the fact that most of it's useful plugins are free and also it's not as bulky as joomla. joomla requires more tech-know-how, if you're lacking in that area, please go for WordPress, it'll go a long way to helping your SEO and site management.

My experience is that because the number of plugins and themes for WordPress far outnumbers those for Joomla, that helps with SEO too. Simply from the fact that you do more with the site. Adding a podcast or other features enabled by the vast array of wordpress plugins may not directly improve SEO – but it encourages users to add content – which helps.

The easier it is to use, the less problems, and the more extras you can add in easily, the more content goes up on the site.

And, of course, some of those plugins like your own modified Link Love plugin help SEO directly.

I use both of them. As far as SEO is concerned there is not a very big difference. It all depends on the utility. Any script for that matter has a learning curve. I have seen newbies asking how to change themes in Wordpress. So Joomla is surely worth trying. Eventhough Wordpress has evolved a lot, I prefer to use it only for blogs. For corporate sites or where I need a mix of static and dynamic content with some pages only available to subscribed members etc, I prefer to go with Joomla. Again this is my personal choice. CMS made simple and website baker are two other very easy and SEO friendly scripts. I use them for some offline clients.

I've seen some amazing things done with Wordpress, and it's more widely used. You could give Joomla a try if you think it's features will accomplish your purpose.

For SEO I prefer Wordpress.

I prefer Wordpress since more people use it. The more people use it the bigger selection of SEO plugins. With wordpress I can get indexed in mins on Google and Yahoo and I haven't been able to accomplish that yet with Joomla

Wordpress is definitely the better one to use for the number of templates available. If you are a beginner is also much easier to learn.

I would prefer using Wordpress. There is lots of support available for wordpress. There are plenty of resources available in the forum of themes, plugins, forums etc around wordpress

both are considered the same by search engines however wordpress is more user friendly especially if you are a beginner and owning your 1st blog wordpress is the way to go.

I know nothing about joomla, but from what I know, joomla sites are soft target for script kiddies to practice defacing. In my country we had this defacing explosion 2 years ago. Never interested to use joomla since then.

Have always been a big fan of wordpress, Joomla has some advantages but I can't get away from wordpress.

Since Google likes wordpress it would be adventageous to utilize a wordpress site.

I will prefer wordpress, more pluggins and more user friendly and easy to use.

Both Are Good For SEO - Its a matter of which you are comfortable with.

As others have said, they are both the same.

You can do great things with either, and if your web host has fantastico you can install either within 3 minutes.

There is great free content out there for both of them including plugins/extensions/themes.

Although there is a lot more WordPress content at the moment.

That's probably partly due to so many people raving about WordPress and saying it's better than Joomla without even looking at Joomla.

I do not see any effect of Joomla or Wordpress on SEO. Success in SEO mostly depends on your ability. If you want to make a eCommerce site then use Joomla and if you want to make a blog type site then use WordPress.

I usually use Wordpress to get traffic to my sites...I am satisfied with the results. So, my vote goes to Wordpress.

If you are serious about building a 'website' I wouldn't use Joomla. I'd use Drupal. Drupal is amazing once you learn it. But a steep learning code. But for some sites it's perfect. But WP is fast, easy and there are so many plugins. And the plugins are the real strength. It's a bit like Microsoft, everyone knows Linux is better, but all of the great software is written for Windows, so it is continually used. Would love to see that cycle broken!

Wow. Interesting to read all the comments here... On page SEO is 100% exactly the same for both platforms. In fact this is true for just about every open source CMS/ commercial CMS/ hosted CMS out there.

The difference is in functionality. Wordpress sites are great for simple stuff done quickly and Joomla is perfect when your looking for a website that is designed to make your visitors jaw hit the floor.

Let me put it this way, Wordpress is like a Volkswagen Passat and Joomla a BMW 5 series, both are capable of cruising at 100 km an hour (on page SEO), but there's a lot more to a 5 series than just cruising.

I doubt it would but testing it sounds like a good idea...

Each has advantages and disadvantages.

There's some sites I use Joomla others Wordpress.

So let's try and add a little bit of science to all this "mine is bigger than yours" nonsense.

Looking at the actual SEO parameters from the perspective of a relative newbie, and giving marks out of 5 -

URL/ File name formatting -
Both can be setup for optimized URL's without plugins. Joomla uses 'sections' and 'categories' to organize content and the section name and category name are used in the URL. Wordpress uses Permalinks. With Joomla, it's actually quite difficult to create a full file path without the page appearing to be in a subdirectory. Google gives more prominence to pages in the root directory and less as pages are one or two steps down.

Ease of setting up out-of-the-box SEO components -
Joomla - On some apache installations when you select the the 3 SEO parameters to 'yes' in global config, you'll need to manually login to your Cpanel or FTP and change htaccess.txt to .htaccess. This is made clear in the config but newbies may have trouble working with the htaccess files particularly as some programs class them as system files and you may need to change your file permissions to see the file.

Wordpress - setting the Permalinks is easy enough but there's a LOT of conflicting information over which settings are best for SEO. WP doesn't make a recommendation inside the Admin, so you'll need to either just use one of the default options (not recommended) or go off and research the best settings, which could get you into even deeper trouble.

Meta Tags (Title)
Joomla - Fairly intuitive in that the page title will appear as the Meta title on all pages with the exception of the Home page. Then it becomes a newbie nightmare trying to find out how to set the home page Title tag. You'll need to research it the first time, the key is within the menu default landing page setting, which is not at all intuitive.
Wordpress - pretty straightforward to set the page title tag, which is the actual title you've created for the page. But what if you want to use all 70 characters in the Meta Title tag? - it means you're going to have a long and ugly page file name. Also, the Title will appear at the top of every page above the content block, so unless you manually remove it from the theme page.php you're stuck with it.

Wordpress - You can't set the Meta description Tag without a plugin. You can handball code into the header.php but it will be static from page to page. Not good.

Easy enough in both. For Joomla I'd recommend you go to 'plugins' - 'TinyMCE' and click 'Extended'. This isn't installing a new plugin it's merely adding more features to the existing plugin and it will give you more page formatting options.

Alt Tags
Easy enough for both.

So with an out-of-the-box approach my vote goes to Joomla for SEO. (you can add up the scores if you want).

IMHO Joomla can get by without an SEO plugin, in fact I rarely use one unless I'm converting an old HTML site to Joomla and need to match the file structure.

Wordpress absolutely needs a Plugin, at which point the playing field is leveled, maybe even tipped slightly in WP's favor.

Generally, I find myself doing more code-hacks when I'm working with WP than with Joomla. Getting that Title tage out of the page.php is standard when I'm doing a WP install.

There are other more in-depth areas of CMS SEO that I won't cover in detail. One is the order in which the page is read by the SE. You ideally want your 'content' area to be read first, followed by column/sidebar 1, then 2. I've had more success finding Joomla templates with an optimized layout than WP. But YMMV.

Disclaimer - more experienced users will find a way to work around the limitations of each, and will build up an arsenal of tips, tweaks, cheats - but I've offered the above aimed more at newbies than experienced users.

When using Plugins-
As I've said I don't usually need an SEO plugin to get good results with Joomla
Using an SEO plugin with WP is pretty much mandatory. But given that plugins are free and very easy to install, my vote goes to Wordpress for SEO. (but only by a tiny fraction).

Fortunately is doesn't all come down to SEO, or at least it shouldn't. You should select your CMS based on your specific content management needs. Are you a blog, or are you more article based? Do you run eCommerce on your site or send people off via affiliate links?

Those questions are more important than fussing over an ounce of SEO.

WordPress all the way, more freedom to customize

yes that is true that in terms of SEO, either one of these will work better. And yeah google loves WP because it is a blog platform and usually blogs are updated frequently which is fresh content...so that's why google loves them. But that's not to say that WP will outrank a traditional html website. Not true. I have some basic ugly html pages with only 7 pages on them....but they are ranking higher in the SERPS because of the content that is unique and the on page seo ( tags, description etc) is done correctly and links are good...therefore I get good rankings.

WP does allow for cool plugins though...for the newbie....or technically challenged...that make is alot easier for them to compete in the IM space because you can just enter stuff in the back office and WP php will create the html for you and make all your pages look good to google bots....oh and don't forget the sitemap too.

Biggest disadvantage with both the Blog/CMS is when you have huge traffic they can't handle it, I would go for custom CMS.

In my view of point , word press is super support to SEO techniques .

If you can take the time to master Drupal, you may start considering it very seriously over Joomla and Wordpress, especially on SEO front.

But all top three CMS's Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal are equally heading forward to make themselves very SEO friendly.

But those who know the inside outs of all three (Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal) CMS's will most likely pick Drupal at this time, simply from SEO's point of view - Just because of its super flexibility over others.
