Main Keywords Within Secondary Keywords?

Hey guys, I have a situation where I have a 2-word phrase as my main keyword, which gets a good amount of exact searches. I also have a four-word phrase which gets about a ninth of the searches as my main one, but it is still a substantial number. In this situation, is it effective to use the 4-word phrase often, because it includes the 2-word phrase?

For example:

Main Phrase: buy dogs (~9000 exacts)
Secondary Phrase: buy dogs and cats (~1000 exacts)

If I use the "Buy Dogs and Cats" phrase, would I be effectively getting traffic from searches of both? Or is this a bad idea for some reason? Has anyone had a situation like this before?

    You'd want to use many keyword variations. You can't conquer a niche by writing one page focusing on one specific phrase, no matter if it's the 2 or 4 word version.

    Build a larger list of relevant keywords and target all of them with different pages.

    You can also write loooong pages where you use plenty different phrases on the same page. Doing this you can end up getting the same page shown for dozens of different phrases in the search results.

    Definitely you will be getting traffic from both. But as one of my fellow member said you must focus to create a large list of relevant keywords, you must follow it. It will surely benefit you.

      To answer your question, yes.

      I ran a couple of tests using a 5-word keyword phrase for my anchor text on my backlinks. I saw top rankings for 2 and 3-word phrases as well that were contained in that 5-word phrase, but that I had never specifically targeted.
