Analyzing Competitor's Site/Backlinks

What is a good method to analyze a competitor's website. someone mentioned a good plan of attack to compete with a site ranked #1 is to see what backlinking strategy they used and emulate it.

would you just go to site explorer and paste their URL in it or is it more complicated than this?

You can do that, sure, but it will only display a couple of pages of backlinks.

Google "backlink checker" any of those free web based services will give you a more complete list and will also display dofollow/nofollow and PR which is helpful in identifying which ones are worth it.
