Reverse SEO A Good Idea?

This is a follow up question to my last post (though not related).

Is reverse SEO on your competition a good idea? Doesn't this open yourself up for retaliation, potentially causing more harm then good? Does Google ever catch on to this? If so, what's their reaction?

Have any of you warriors ever had good/bad experiences with this?

  • Reverse engineering a website is a good tactic.

I only ever do it when my own websites are established and have a lot of indexed backlinks. - This way my backlink portfolio isn't exactly the same as my competitors.

I have never been prone to a backlash or retaliation but what's wrong with a bit of healthy competition
  • It's an excellent tactic! I've gotten multiple keywords to the front page of Google using this strategy. No retaliation. Competition is not harmful or illegal

I reverse engineer sites seo strategy all the time, it's the best way to learn new tricks of the trade, plus it's free.

You really should look beyond your own competition when learning new techniques. Example look at high competition keywords even If they are not in your niche, then dig into their on-page seo (source code) & figure out what they are doing. Off-page seo is the same, follow the backlink trail.
