So I made my blog about a month ago and built it around a keyword that I thought got 8k monthly searches. I also made my domain as the longtail. I moved up in google from pg 68 to page 19 to pg 5, and was getting pretty exited. Then last night in a forum someone told me that longtail keyword was only getting 12 monthly searches and 8k broad monthly searches. I was pretty bummed out when I found out this is true.

All along when I use the google keyword tool I had the broad match type checked and not the exact phrase.

This is a huge dissapointment considering I've been working pretty hard for the past month.

Just want some of your guys opinion. Did I completely waste all of my time, or is there something I can do to change my website?

Or should I just completely ditch it and start a new campaign in a less competitive niche?

If you are building backlink it might be good. You can build it into an authority website.

It depends. I know with my blog only about 30% of my traffic comes from search engines the other 70% comes from direct visitors or referring sites. Those backlinks will generate you traffic as well and your RSS feed. It's never a lost cause Plus with a blog you posts can be backlinked for certain keywords as well.

I also made my domain as the longtail.
So many things I want to say here.

The above quote - the domain name no longer matters to Google. Matt Cutts said they have "dialed down" this technique. However, I still do it because Bing takes optimized URLs. So no biggie there unless your into branding your site.

Second of all - do you really expect your website to get to the first page within a month? I have done backlinking on some websites that have taken me a year to hit the first page - other sites only two weeks. So it sounds like your doing fine - you really have to be patient.

Lastly, since you are doing a blog - keep adding to it. I'm assuming you are doing this since it is a blog. You want a lot of repeat visitors and "fans" of your blog. Within time you will make it - but the biggest thing that you are lacking is patience.

I most certainly didn't expect to make it into the first page within a month, but I had the intentions that I would make it there eventually with that keyword. At this point I am doubting the whole niche itself because it is really competitive.

If I were to continue this campaign should I just try doing SEO for different, less competitive keywords that get a good amount of GMS?

Or should I invest my time into a less competitive niche?

I am sure that most people would disagree with my saying this, but I use exact match subdomains separated by dashes off of my main domain to avoid that very problem. Additionally, you can get any domain you want this way...all free...

How's that working out for you? I've tried a few experiments with sub-domains, but admittedly not enough to form a true conclusion. Do you find them fairly easy to rank? It seemed a bit harder than an exact match domain. At least for me.
