Website jumping all over google

Hi, very new to SEO but finding some great resources on this site .. so thanks to everyone here :O) ... I have what probably is a stupid question but it seems a little strange.

I've created my first test site which I'm trying to get up the rankings for a certain phrase (uploaded articles, working on back links etc..) ... its been live now for about 2 months. On some searches I'm up to page 2 for of about 1 Million results. But other days when I search google I may get 800k results and I'm no where to be seen. Check again in the afternoon .. I'm on page 3 for 1.5 Million results. All of which is for the same phrase.... So I'm assuming google use different servers and your ranking on those servers are different ... if this is the case .. how long does this usual take to settle down.

    Have you heard of the 'Google-Dance'? It would appear that is what you are experiencing.

    I have stuck together about 15 sites over the past 90 days and each of them that either I backlinked the hell out of; or was a new domain to start with, got the 'Google-Dance'.

    Just keep doing what you're doing, it will settle in time, 30-90 days.

    Google does have lots of different search servers and from what I understand they all work that little bit differently to the next, plus they update via propagation between servers so changes take time to filter round the system just like DNS updates.

    My advice is NOT to use automated back-link tools early in the campaign.
    I would hope you are manually building links in small numbers to start with.

    Suddenly build 50 links today, then the next day and the next day and you will see yourself in the results very quickly as Google loves fresh new content and likes to give most things a chance at Star-dom;
    Unfortunately, if you do suddenly put 50 Back-Links in today, then to keep a "new-site" up, Google's gonna be expecting 50 Links tomorrow.... and so on..

    • As said above, it's the google dance as it's called.

      nothing to really worry about. Build slowly and consistently and you will see it settle down. it can be quite fast and sometimes it takes a while before it does, but it's nothing new and nothing to really worry about.
  • Hi - I use Traffic Travis to track my rankings and EVERY time there is movement (one way or the other). I now think of Google as the ocean, forever moving... regards Allen

  • Go with the flow and monitor it. Do some tweaks and don't fret too much. It's after all y trial and error and Google changes algorithm all the time. So don't depend all on just backlinks for SEO, add in other tools like videos and social networks
  • This is a phenomenon called the "Google Dance". It happens when your site is new, and when you're in the processes on building backlinks. It's totally normal, and as your site ages things will settle down a bit.
  • It does happen alot and can be quite annoying and even scary if you are not expecting it. I'm sure it will calm down soon. It usually ony lasts a few days.

    I hope you have your dancing shoes on. Google is taking you out onto the dance floor, even if you don't want to.

    Just keep plugging away. Chances are you'll actually come back stronger.
  • If you are not in the top 5 it doesn't matter.

    And over and over Search is a moving Target. What you might think is a Number ___ fill in whatever you think, you do not in fact have that place. Google tracks user behaviors, Geo Targets, etc. So the search you do for your target keyword phrase my show you a ranking, but another person in another state typing in the exact same phrase will likely get a different result.

    Focus on consistently finding your site on the first page and don't worry so much about exact placement.

    The money comes not from being number 1, but from being in the mix and then being able to convert when people do come to your site.

      1. Determine which of your pages were hardest hit.
      2. "Thin" content is being hit hard.
      3. "Article sites" are being hit hard.
      4. "Copied content" is being hit hard.
      5. "Duplicate content" is being hit hard.
      6. Sites with high ad-to-content ratios are being hit hard.
      7. Sites using AdSense are NOT being hit as hard (eHow).
      and it solution
      1. Immediately drop all your "hardest hit" pages.
      2. Add more original content to your pages.
      3. Get out of the "article submission" business.
      4. Eliminate all scraped, spun, and "copied content".
      5. Use only "unique content" on EVERY page.
      6. Reduce the number of ads, especially at the top of the page.
      7. Use AdSense on all your pages - it certainly won't hurt.
  • Some of my sites in the past have experienced this weird dance. It is nothing unusual, and usually your site will get a steady placement after a few months.
  • You must have searched after being logged in Gmail and then again after being logged out.You must have searched in google.com or or any other google servers.Google dance happens but this is not the case of a google dance as your site is dancing 3 times in a day.This could be because of personalized search results.
