Hello,

I'm new to this forum, my name is Simon, 29 from the UK. I have read quite a few posts about starting-up problems etc and to be honest I've got lost myself.

I'm looking for niche markets that I could tap into. I have a few ideas:
- personalised mugs (investment £1.5k including press, printer and online shop, reason: I like doing stuff in Illustrator and its fun)
- self-development and loosing weight, well I lost about 4 stone since August last year, know something about it and could help others
- self - development and self-help - love listening to Anthony Robbins and I could use this stuff somehow
- fitness - micro-niche: abs training 'cos I started doing it myself, learn it and know quite a lot.

My question is how do I research those niches using Google Trends, AdWords, Insights.
I've seen some videos by Ed Dale's Challenge. It gives me some idea but do I have to invest in market samurai or do I have to invest in other software like the internet time machine etc?

I don't really know what to do next. I don't wanna just jump in and regret. I try to find areas that I'm intrested in a bit so it will help me in the long run.

I started reading Paul Myer's Need To Know but I need to take some action right now and make money at last. Driving a truck at nights is just way too boring.

What do I do next?

Regards,
Simon

    Hi, Simon
I'm not sure how much you want to spend to start off, but the Google Keyword Tool is free. The problem is that you need to know how to "read" it. That is why I mentioned that if you have the money, Market Samurai can be really helpful. They have a number of videos that show you how to pick your niches and decide if they are profitable niches before you just dive in. In other words, you need to do your keyword research before picking a niche. Actually, I believe if you go to YouTube, you will find Market Samurai videos there too that show how it is used. It used to be that when you would sign up for the trial Market Samurai, they would send you an email with a discounted rate near the end of your trial period. Maybe some other people can comment on how Market Samurai has been working for them since Google made changes a few months back. Hope that helps.

      Thanks Kim,

You know Kim, I can afford it but I don't want to pay for it. I watched their videos on youtube and I bet it can help a lot. I'm not quite sure but that data on samurai is sourced from google tools anyway so I think there is a way to get answers from AdWords, Trends or Insights the thing is how you interpret that data. Numbers themselves dont say a lot if you dont know what they mean.
What do you think about my ideas? Any chances of success?

      regards,
      Simon

I'd stay away from fitness/weight loss if you are just starting out, they are competitive markets. You should begin with a less competitive niche so you don't lose the motivation with your first site.

Listen to dristo. When I first started out I chose weight loss. It was something I knew a ton about and I didn't care how competitive it was. I knew I was hungry and that I wouldn't let anything stop me.

Three months in I gave up because it was too competitive.

I didn't listen because I was hard-headed. don't make that mistake. Go for niches that contain an audience with a pressing problem, a problem that you know you can solve. And find one that hardly anyone else is targeting.

Why make niche marketing harder than it has to be?

Good luck. I don't mean to rain on your parade. I just thought I'd share my experience in the hope that it helps.

      Cheers.

Thanks for that, now it makes me think twice and I'm taking your advice.
Do you tap into markets that you have no experience, knowledge in?
        How do you do that?

You should never really target a niche you have zero knowledge in. If you know nothing about tools and construction, good luck convincing construction workers that you're an authority on the subject.

Instead, go deep. I should have clarified before. If you're going to choose weight loss, think long tail.

Instead of weight loss, think weight loss for the elderly. Or, go even deeper than that. Weight loss for the elderly going on vacation.

The trick is to think of small pools of the population who all have a common problem that you think you can solve. Think outside the box.

          Hope that helps.

I dont want to deal with the fitness market as a whole. Abdominal muscles is a micro niche and a lot of people are obssesed with it so it might be a way, however I'm not sure 'cos I havent done a proper reasearch on it using marketing tools. I might think it is cool but other people might not care!

Most tools will pull their data from Google, as that is where they need to get the data from so that you can get the proper info.

Like you said, if you want to do the manual labor yourself, then you don't really need any tools at all, as it is all about looking at the numbers the right way.

With that being said, go with those niches that you are talking about, but don't make them your money sites. Yet. See, you need to make money to stay motivated, so pick less competitive ones to start with while working on the sites that you love. You will add tons of great content and the traffic will naturally come to the sites that you love working on due to the great content you will be writing.

My keyword tools are Market Samurai and Niche Finder.

Niche Finder is great for quickly researching a keyword and MS gives more data.

    Good luck,

      Thanks guys for your posts.

And how many of you deal with online shops?

I have that idea of personalised mugs store. I can design them myself what I like doing or I can outsource it abroad and get design really cheap. I was thinking of targeting specific markets like narrow boaters, pubs, inns, household themes, kids etc.
The innitial investment is as I learnet 2400$ but ROI is very good. You sell 300 mugs and you get your money back which is quite good.
I can get an online store up and running quite cheap so I could take advantage of it.
Competition on ebay is massive, people steal projects and do everything they can to sell, that's why I dont wanna concentrate on ebay.

What do you think about it?
How many of you are running an online shop?
Or do you just prefer affilaite programs etc, much less hassle?

      Regards,
      Simon

    Hi Simon,

Yes, you want to pick a narrower niche. For example, a lot of us internet marketing types spend far too long being desk jockeys at the keyboard, and we'd love to buy a product that was 'Killer Abs for Internet Marketers'. Give us some of the usual exercises on the mat, plus a bunch of crunches we can do sitting at our computers, and I reckon you've got yourself a nice little info product that you can sell for $17 and get us on your list where you'll then warm us up for further 'fitness for internet marketers' type products.

I would be careful about entering into any business with substantial startup costs, like the mug's game you mentioned. If you did go for it, I'd specialise in say, customised hand-painted design mugs for children, mothers etc. Do your due diligence and let the numbers guide your decisions on that one.

Use Market Samurai to do your keyword research. Many people don't know this, but the keyword research module is F-R-E-E. To check your competition, load up the free version of Traffic Travis. Looks like they ironed out the issues with a recent patch, so it's up and running again.

There are other tools that you can use in addition once you need to start digging deeper into the world of IM. But for your research needs both of those two programs should suffice. (Though the lack of title and URL competition data in MS has been annoying me.)
