Bing and Yahoo will eventually compete a little more than they are now, but I do not see anyone in the near future causing any problems for Google. I am interested however to see how all of this little fighting with facebook carries over. Should be some interesting news to come from that little mess.

Competing with google is not an easy job.
No doubt they are creative people but there are a few other websites who hold a good reputation in competition to google.
Yahoo may come up with a new strategy to take down google and it might also happen that facebook comes up with something new and big in future.
We cant make any guesses in this industry, it changes too quickly..

Why are people mentioning Facebook? Google's core business is being a search engine. Unless I missed some news and Facebook wants to branch into search, how can they be competitors?

There's no question that the only major competitor to Google in the search arena is Bing. I also believe they realize if they are to come even close to Google, they have to be more like them and are working towards this. Whether that means Bing overtakes Google as the favorite or even comes close is another question. Yahoo is using Bing's technology so they are one and the same, at least until 2020, so not a factor for now, at least not as a separate search engine. It will be interesting to see what happens in nine years.

Google will never have a strong competitor, it will have only competitors like Bing, Yahoo, msn, altavista etc. Anyway, I think everyone will use Google in the future like they are using it in the present. I think it's the greatest brand ever and it can't be detronated.

Yahoo? Get real, people. MS screwed that up. They recently

      Yahoo is basically "bing," BTW.

      Facebook is a different animal.

Now if you want to talk "competitor," that would be apple.

But even google's android has overtaken the iphone.

You know, the OP never asked about competing with anything else other than search, which is the core business of Google. Lucid came out with a very relevant reply. Relevancy.. and google.. works anywhere

I don't really see any 'strong' competitor to Google. Even though Yahoo comes second but is it really worth calling a strong one? Nah. But who knows what happens after another year.

Here was the part I was referring to.
Who will be the Google strongest Competitor in future. In the term of search and visit very few of site are competing Google.
Google doing tons of things, from blogger and youtube, to android and google TV.

That's the "visit" part. We also tend to focus on google.com, when the
rest of the world goes to google.countrycode, like google.co.in,
google.com.hk, google.de. That gives google at least 6 sites in the
top 20 worldwide, 3 in the top 10. Google.co.in beats Bing hands down.

That's not even mentioning gmail, docs, etc. Google commands huge
amounts of web traffic. Google is the forefront of cloud computing,
and developing cloud computers. Google is like an octopus that grows
an extra arm whenever it needs it.

Wow I was going to say Yahoo and Bing will compete for the number two spot in the next 5 years.

When you put it this way you are completely right. Google really has not foreseable competition. Unless there is some ground breaking technology from a company like Apple, Google is here to stay. May be the Q-Tip of the internet.

      Hello:

I did some tests recently with Microsoft's Adcenter and I found the number of clicks and quality of clicks comparable to Google's Adwords. Used to be a few years back, you couldn't get nowhere near the # of clicks that Google could provide. The clicks are cheaper too. For those who don't know, your ads will show on Bing and Yahoo networks.

I think Adcenter will shoot themselves in the foot though, because they are getting very strict about relevancy. For instance, all keywords you bid on have to actually be on the landing page or they will get disapproved.

Why do you think they are doing this? Because Google is, that's why they are considered the best and Bing is just trying to catch up. By the end of this year, Adwords and Adcenter will be more similar than they are dissimilar.

True, but seems unlikely. Would have to be an existing company with lots of moola and technology. Company willing to enter the search arena. The only potential ones I can think of are IBM and Apple. IBM has the technology or ability to recreate from scratch and the money but not the willingness to do so. They are more IT outsourcers these days than innovators. Apple may not have the technology and knowhow but they have the money. They may however be happy selling their iPods and iPhones and making money selling digital media and not at all interested in trying to create a third major search engine or even buying one.

I don't think a DuckDuckGo site will be the one. Strangely, just today I saw someone selling their search engine site, can't remember the name, and incredibly asking $20k for it.

Sure, Facebook could integrate a search engine into its interface and a whole lot of other things like Google has done. Question is, will they do it? The money to do it is there but is the will there? Right now, they have the traffic. I don't think they have the technology. Next question is, if they did this, would that turn people off Facebook or make it more popular because it has more services?

Don't forget to count the power of video and how BIG YouTube has become. Based on results I am obtaining for my clients and my business, YOU tube is our NUmber 2 traffic source Over Bing and Yahoo. Video ranks faster and works well for anyone looking to increase traffic.

However with that said, recently a well known source published some pretty amazing stats which shows Bing starting to take over some real market share.

    Hope this helps!

I think the combination of Yahoo/Bing and Facebook might stir up a flare at best. I have seen over 12 years of the Internet and I assure you that Facebook is obscenely overrated.

Some even attempt to compare Zuckerberg to Bill Gates which is absurd. All Facebook users are computer users. But not all computer users are Facebook users.

Answer this one question and you will know the inevitable fate of Facebook.
      - When was the last time actually clicked on an advertisement on Facebook?
      - eventually people will realize they are getting almost no ROI.
      - The most Facebook can make of it advertising is by demographics.
      - when net advertising money dries up, the momentum of Facebook will stall.
      - In comparison to Google there is no comparison.

I do admire the Facebook interface. I have seen quite a few and I must admit that it is the most precision Web interface I have ever seen. But that aside I think it is clear that Facebook is a fad that will pass just like MySpace.

Even if Yahoo/Bing and Facebook gave it a maximum effort, they are faced with a logistics nightmare. Three systems, three ad models ( or more ). a company arrogantly sleeping (Yahoo).

look at the current front end of Yahoo! ... you hardly even know it is a search engine. You are slammed in the face with advertisements that give the site the appearance of a news and entertainment portal. the search box is basically the last thing you notice. This is the arrogance of Yahoo over the last 12 years.

In 1999 I saw this and said Yahoo was crap. At the time people obviously called me insane. But it is easy to see when a company has no vision and loses focus on its core business model.

Such will be the entanglements of any kind of co-op between Yahoo/Bing and Facebook. Bing is Microsoft's 3rd attempt at search. Each of its predecessors was heavily funded and died when that funding ended ( you would think they would have learned by now that throwing a massive advertising budget is not working in this case).

They may capture the public's attention for as long as they want to throw money at it. Aside from that, they will pass into legend.

They are horribly outclassed by Google on a technological level. The Google infrastructure is magnificent. if Microsoft was going to catch up to Google in any significant way - they would have done so by now.

Facebook has been enjoying one hell of a ride over the past three years or so as "the" online place to hang out. If you are > 25 years old and want to put your old high school group of friends back together, Facebook is the miracle that overcomes "Johnny went away to college and Freddy got married and Frank went in the army" and so forth. Through the magic of the web, you are all back together again instead of just e-mailing or chatting one on one or whatever.

The problem is, other than that, really good free photo sharing, and some simple online games, Facebook has little to offer.

But Mark Zuckerberg is not stupid. Integrating a search and surf function into Facebook in order to keep users on site all the time sounds to me like just the kind of thing he would like to do.

The question is, will he succeed? AOL tried this (AOL search powered by Google).

Facebook is already a little too "big brother" for my tastes, and I probably spend 20 minutes a night there catching up with friends -- so I do not think a Facebook search function is the next big thing.

I think the real challenger to Google has not arisen yet, but will in the next three to ten years with further developments in artificial intelligence.

Print magazines are not quite extinct yet, because they offer better photos and more informative articles that 90% of what you find online -- and this is the standard that everyone is looking for. When someone develops a search oriented artificial intelligence that delivers content that good every time, well, then the game changes, doesn't it?

Bing is 100% google's most realistic competitor. Facebook scares google because facebook is getting more pageviews, more use and has the capacity to facilitate search - essentially cutting a large part of the web experience away from googles grasp.

Bing is the company to worry about however, because Bing is microsoft and microsoft is the king. Just remember, microsoft still earns about 10billion more a year than google does. That is real money that funds real work and real products (like bing) - that yahoo will never be able to touch. Yahoo doesn't have the bankroll to R&D, hire and produce the best work in the world. Bing does.

And mark my words, as google loses their "don't be evil" mystique and emerges as yet another monolithic a-hole megacorp, microsoft is going to regain some of their past sexiness as a company. This bodes well for their offerings (take for instance Windows Vista / 7 that basically, everyone loves).

Imo, this question is so hard to answer. For now, I think Google's strongest competitor will be technological innovation. Which basically means that Google will remain at the #1 position until we, as a civilization, have no need for a manual search engine. Think complete domotics integration or something similar. Perhaps too farfetched right now but who knows. Then again, once that happens it might be Google behind many of the domotics

But anyway, based on popularity right now, it could be Facebook. But if we think back on why Google became so popular, I'm sure the user experience and interface had a hand in it. So perhaps it'll be a company with an entirely new vision. But I wouldn't put it past me that Twitter could become a player too.
