Importance of SEO (yes, dumb title...but..)

Today i called up my landlord.

They have a very high quality web site which provides a certain kind of service. The niche is incredible keyword rich. Their site is established, its over 5 years old.

So i quoted her a price for SEO work. My first quote might have been a little high. No big deal, in the next mail i made her a better deal, still waiting for their reply.

(Just as a sidenote, what i charge is way, way less compared to SEO companies which would probably charge thousands for such a job. I have experience doing this for my own site, i KNOW i can rank them)

The kicker here is when i looked over their site, checked keywords and rankings.

They are nowhere anywhere with ANY keyword, not even in the top 200. (Usually i dont even scan more than top 100..but i couldnt believe that they are not even in top 100 for any keyword)

Their site, although over 5 years old....has PR0 and Alexa of 1.6Mill.

What i am saying here...do people realize that they are basically wasting money if they do NOT employ at least some kind of SEO....or being aware what a SIGNIFICANT difference it would be if they were to rank page #1 in Google with some of those keywords?

It made a little bit sad. For me, it would be a welcome additional income..and for them a boost for a great website which right now is hardly anywhere in terms of rankings. Whatever they pay me they would gain back in a few months, this is almost a given.

I hope that she at least considers my latest offer.

How do you make people realize it doesn't always make sense to "save" a couple hundred bucks...and how do you make people/potential customers realize it is really bad to have a business website...but having NO ranking whatsoever with it. Maybe i should go in their office with the market samurai printout with this long list of keywords all showing "-" for rankings...

Sigh...

Sadly, there are plenty of people out there who think that just *having* a website is good enough. They think that all you have to do is put *something* on the world wide web, and you will have traffic flocking to it (which, as we all know, isn't even close to being the case!) That's why you see so many poorly-designed sites, so much bad sales copy, and so many sites that are just plain useless.

I'm assuming your landlord has no clue what SEO is. Have you explained it in super-basic terms (ie: SEO=more traffic, and more traffic=more money)? You would think that would grab her attention a little better

People like this can keep ya in business right? . Maybe they just wanted to stick an URL on business cards, e-mails, flyers, or to do PPC and never really considered SEO or even knew it was possible?

I have a client who pays me every month to make sure his web site (HisName.com) will be #1 if someone searches on His Name....and he doesn't care about any other keywords. I've pointed out to him that anyone who is already looking for him will find his site anyway, and that he needs to lure in the people looking for the service he provides that don't already know about him and his business, but nothing I say convinces him. I've talked about him drawing in more customers with fatter wallets, but it just doesn't matter. He's perfectly happy as long as HisName.com is #1 for His Name. LOL!

  • Hey, I have an idea: convince their top competitor in the neighborhood to let you work your SEO magic on their site, & create a Google Places page for that competitor. Six months from now they'll be sorry they didn't take you up on your offer when their competitor wins all of the business they could have had. Present them with their competitor's G Places page and let them eat their hearts out with all of the positive reviews. Just a thought.

The world of marketing is always evolving, and SEO has become a revolutionary tool of choice for top businesses. Knowing how to market your business through SEO can catapult you to the top of search engine results thus creating more traffic, revenue and growth as a business. You need to create a strategy to get to the top, and more importantly, stay there.
