Just set up my first adwords campaign. Found a niche were a couple of popular keywords are cpc $.32. Initially Google set up the max bid on these keywords at $2.03. I manually changed the max to a couple of pennies above what the keyword tool said the approximate cpc was, 30 cents and 31 cents.

As soon as I did that there was a display by each keyword saying: "below first page bid." Here's my question: does this mean the ad won't be displayed? Does it mean it will display only on page two, three or higher?

This is not a popular niche and there are only two to three Adwords ads on the first page now. Will they not show mine? And finally, why the hell does the keyword search tool say approximate cpc $.32 when to get in the game it's so much more than that? I've tried looking for these answers on Google but couldn't find them. Any Adwords veterans? Thanks.

  • I am not a veteran but I have been messing with Adwords as well...

    The status of your ad may change time to time... there's a tool in adwords page, under reporting tools > ad preview... there you can see where and how your ad is displayed...

    Below first page bid means it does not show up in the first page... people, when/if they move on to the second/third pages and so on WILL see your ad...

    • Yeah, but what if the first page only has one or two ads? It doesn't make sense to bump an ad to the second or third page. I think I found a few forums addressing this and the answer is it's kind of a trick Google plays to try and keep the bids high.

      Lots of people have said they saw the same message, "below first page bid" while they were actually at the number one or two spot on the first page. Imagine Google trying to play games like that? :rolleyes:

    In regards your ad showing if there is only 2 or 3 ads again depends on many variables, first your own settings, this would include your daily spend, for example if this is low and does not cover the expected views triggered by that key then again based on setting google will try and pace the ad meaning it will not show every time.

    the gkwt at best causes many variances when looking up the average cpc, again this is based on many factors, it can not guess your quality score as just one example.

    To have a more accurate view when doing this create a test ad group / campaign and load your keys to that from the gkwt, then open this ad group and select to view in spread sheet format, when doing that you will get a more accurate view of the cpc that they are currently retailing at.

    even then this can be still out with often many other people having all sorts of automated price adjustments and settings all firing of at the same time.

    In many way try to ignore the din / sound around you and work within the prices and setting that allow you to make a profit and do not be tempted to follow the sheep and the pricing as set by them and you should run fine.

    being new cut back on your daily spend just a little if its high for a day or so and as you start to get your google feet you can wind things up a little more.

    • The short answer is.

      1. Your ads will show sometimes if it is below first page bid, even with no competitors.

      2. Even with no competitors Google still decides if your ad should show, which is very annoying, but it has to do with quality score and that keywords history.

      3. You can just test it yourself, put the bid up for that day and down and check the impressions.
