Google Doesn't Know Which Page to Index Higher - Need Help!

Hi,

I have an odd problem!

I built a website for a UK company in the coffee machine industry - very competitive. It has about 500 pages.

I also do the SEO foe them (mainly by article marketing) and the homepage of the site has been in the top 6 of Google UK for a couple of years for keyword phrase 'coffee machines'

Recently however I have found the web site slipping down the rankings to page 2. The odd thing is that when it appears on page 2 a different page is being indexed. This page has format: domainname/coffee_machines

The two pages take it in turns to show up either on the first or second page and this has been going on for months!

It seems that Google can't make its mind up which is the most relevant page to index, either the homepage or the more specific one.

I would appreciate any views on which page I should concentrate my back-linking to in the future, the home page or the more specific page that is sometimes picked up.

At the moment I am back linking to both but not sure if this is making it worse.

(I know about signing out of Google and disabling search history before searching etc)

Many thanks

It might be possible that the competition for that particular keyword has been increased during the course of time. Google keeps on changing its index and no one can guarantee a fix position in search engine ranking pages and that's one of the reasons why people keeps doing back-linking.

I would recommend focusing on the page which has better content, it doesn't really matters whether its home page or any sub pages. however you should also keep in mind about deep linking when selecting a page to work upon.

A bit hard to troubleshoot without the actual URLs...

Which page do you want to rank, the home page or the sub-page?

The home page has by far the most back links. I did a few deep links to the other page for completeness as this has is most relevant content, but is really just a landing page before drilling down to specific types of coffee machines.
Site is cafebardotcodotuk other page select coffee machines from home page
I'm not important enough to give links yet : )

Hmmm, I think it's a update done by Google. I have a clients that have the same problem with their site. But I only build links to their home page.

    Let's see what will happened.

Another fine example of what I keep telling folks that swear up & down, they just have to have an EMD, which they don't really need. It's just as easy to rank an internal page, as it is an index page.

Your ranking an internal page, exactly the way it should be done (nice job)!

I see .../coffee_machines.aspx at position #8 on page #1, when doing a .uk search from the US.

What's happening is your on page seo is telling Google your .../coffee_machines.aspx page is the most important page for the keyword "coffee machines".

All those internal links in your left sidebar are also making this happen, which isn't a bad thing.

Your on-page seo is spot on, If it was me I would keep at building backlinks for the internal page with anchor-text (coffee machines) just to beef up the backlinks.
